BOAT SINKS IN JAMES RIVER; 2 PASSENGERS MISSING

Two people were missing Sunday and three were rescued after a fishing boat carrying five people sank in the James River, authorities said.

The boat took a wave over its bow in rough water about a half-mile from the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel, said Petty Officer Blair Thomas, a Coast Guard spokesman in Portsmouth.

Richard Wynn Carroll, 30; his son, Richard Wynn Carroll Jr., 9; and a cousin, Solomon Wesley Darden, 15, all of Suffolk, were treated at Riverside Regional Medical Center on Sunday and released. They had been in the water for more than seven hours before being rescued, said Vernon Covington, watch supervisor for the Coast Guard in Portsmouth.

A 26-year-old and an 18-year-old still were missing late Sunday, Covington said.
