No need to mix with the madding crowd shuffling between classes in the hallowed halls of Hokieland.
From the sanctity of your own slumber-and-computing nest, just crank up your Internet connection, hop on the World Wide Web and call up the newspaper's electronic edition.
The CT, as it's known around the Drillfield, made its fledgling steps online this summer. CT computer whiz Derek Karnes posted articles from the paper's final spring semester issue. Then, Karnes added the news, sports, features and opinion articles from the CT's June 27 midsummer issue.
Beginning in late August, Web users should be able to browse each week's editions and past issues. The Times home page, to employ a little jargon, includes information on advertising, too, such as ad rates ($585.90 for a full-page ad) and deadlines. It also includes a staff box, so you can reach your favorite staffer by e-mail.
Eventually, Karnes hopes to ad photos with the stories and even comics from the paper's homegrown funnies page.
Use the URL (more cyberspeak) of http://www.vt.edu:10021/news/collegiateTimes/ct.html to reach the CT home page. The only part of the address that needs to be uppercase is the "T" in Times.
The student-run Collegiate Times is one of many college newspapers across the country posting articles for cyber news hounds. You may also reach more than 70 other such papers across the country and world, such as the Digital Missourian at the University of Missouri, or the Turun Ylioppilas Lehti at the University of Turku, for those who might wish to hone their Finnish.
Even a paper from the dreaded University of Virginia has entered the mix. The Cavalier Daily, one of two daily papers at UVa, has archives back to January. And wouldn't you know it, those Wahoos can't even loosen up in cyberspace: the home page starts with the obligatory quote from Mr. Jefferson.
