NOTE PEDDLERS OUT OF BUSINESS

Forget about skipping class and just buying the notes later.

Tech Notes dropped out of the note-peddling business in June, after a year of selling copyrighted lecture notes scribed by anonymous classmates.

Dave Chapman, who leased space to Tech Notes, said the opposition the owners faced probably influenced their decision to close up shop.

From the start, Virginia Tech faculty and the chief justice of the university's Honor System spoke out against the business.

Film professor Steve Prince, in an October interview, said the company was profiting off his intellectual labor and stepping on his academic freedom.

Honor System officials insisted the note service violated the Honor Code, which prohibits unauthorized possession of academic materials.

Despite the controversy, Tech Notes seemed to be attracting customers.

"They seemed like they kept their heads above water the whole time they were in business," Chapman said.

The owners of Tech Notes, Eric Arcudi and Grady Goodwin, could not be reached for comment.
