BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg Intermediate Women's Club will sponsor an attic and bake sale Friday and Saturday, Aug. 25-26, to benefit several local groups.
The sale starts at 8:30 a.m. each day. It will be at Gable's Shopping Center on South Main Street.
Proceeds will benefit the Women's Resource Center, the Montgomery County Christmas Store, Blacksburg Fire and Rescue Squad, the Montgomery County Humane Society, and other groups.
Fall seminar on child abuse
PEARISBURG - The Giles Multidiscipline Team sponsors its sixth annual fall seminar "Legal Issues Surrounding Child Abuse and Neglect," featuring speakers Mark Ells and Daniel Armagh, both of the American Prosecutors Research Institute's National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse, a non-profit affiliate of the National District Attorney's Association.
Ells is director of the association and Armagh is senior attorney at the association.
Target participants are social workers, police investigators, commonwealth attorneys, judges, therapists, adult and juvenile probation officers, educators and medical personnel.
The cost of the program is $35 and is limited to 130 people. The program is Tuesday, September 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Mountain Lake Resort Hotel. Registration deadline is Sept. 6.
The program is being funded by the Giles Multidiscipline Team for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and in-kind donations from Mountain Lake Resort Hotel.

Voter registration
CHRISTIANSBURG -
A registrar of voters will be available Tuesday, Sept. 5, to Friday, Sept. 8, at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Christiansburg.
Qualified persons can take their applications to register to vote. Forms for requesting a visit can be obtained by calling 382-5741, Monday-Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Completed forms must be received by the General Registrar not less than five days prior to any of the approved days listed above in order for a visit to be scheduled on that day.
NRCC gets grant
DUBLIN - New River Community College has received a $75,000 federal grant to continue the Regional Center for Single Parents, Displaced Homemakers and Single Pregnant Women.
The center provides assistance for those students, including tuition, books, child care, and transportation. Other programs include support sessions in child care, parenting skills, study skills and other topics.

RSVP plans several activities
CHRISTIANSBURG - Montgomery County's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will have a busy next few weeks as participants rock in their rocking chairs to raise money for scholarships, conduct a yard sale, prepare for the Apple Butter Jamboree.
The seniors will be rocking Aug. 28 on the courthouse lawn in downtown Christiansburg. Proceeds from the Rockathon and a bake sale will go to scholarships for students who want careers in health care.
The yard sale will be held in the first week in September. The program is looking for donations of yard sale items, including glassware, furniture, collectibles, and clothing
The Apple Butter Jamboree is scheduled for Sept. 12-13 at Park United Methodist Church. The participants need canning jars, rings, lids and sugar.
