Cancer society Relay for Life

FLOYD - The Floyd County Unit of the American Cancer Society will sponsor its first Relay for Life fund-raising event Friday, Aug. 25, 5-9 p.m., at Floyd County High School

Each participant will collect at least $25. Proceeds are used for research into a cure for cancer.

During the event, teams of eight to 15 runners or walkers will circle the high school track.

Walk to benefit vet school

BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg Host Lions Club and the Breakfast Lions Club will sponsor a walkathon Saturday, Sept. 9, starting at 8 a.m. at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

More than 400 walkers are expected to participate in the five-mile course around Blacksburg.

Participants also are encouraged to bring their canine walking partners to help raise money for the Leader Dog Training Program.

Walkers will collect sponsorships. All donations benefit local sight conservation programs and leader dog training.

Water stations will be placed along the route, and medical and veterinary aid will be available.

Sponsorship or registration forms are available at local veterinarians, all National Bank of Blacksburg branches, First National Bank of Christiansburg and public libraries.
