Town Council's Human Resources Committee now is considering such a policy.
Committee members were surprised this week to learn that employees have ID cards. Town Manager Tom Combiths and Assistant Town Manager Rob Lyons had to pass their own cards around the table before the members were convinced.
Among the information contained on the cards is the employee's Social Security number. Councilman Eddie Hale suggested that, if the cards are to be used to identify employees, some other number be used.
The committee also is looking at a policy covering court-ordered volunteers doing work for the town. Court-ordered volunteers work off fines or jail sentences instead of serving time as prisoners, Town Attorney Frank Terwilliger explained.
Proposed policies to be considered at a future meeting include the use of cellular phones by town employees, computer security and dress codes.
Committee Chairman Roy D'Ardenne said the proposed policies would be studied "looking for ways in which we are too restrictive or ways in which we can entrap ourselves."
The policies being considered came from a general set of municipal policies drawn up by a company in Washington state. Terwilliger is to adapt them for use in Pulaski.
