VA. GETS FLOOD FUNDS TO FIX ROAD DAMAGE

The federal government Tuesday awarded Virginia $4.5 million in emergency relief funds to repair roads damaged by the June floods that ravaged the state.

"Immediately after the flooding, federal and state officials worked hand-in-hand to conduct damage assessments, while local work crews worked around the clock to restore access to the damaged roadways as quickly as possible," said Rodney E. Slater, an administrator of the Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration, in a prepared statement. "On behalf of [Transportation Secretary Federico Pena], I am pleased to provide these funds to reimburse the state for that emergency work and to provide funding for any remaining repairs."

The highway administration allocated the funds, based on preliminary estimates, to 21 counties, including Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Craig, Franklin, Giles, Roanoke and Rockbridge. The cities of Buena Vista, Lexington and Roanoke also received awards.

Don Holloway, a highway administration engineer who helped prepare the estimates, said two of the larger amounts went to Bedford County, which got $1.13 million; and to Rockbridge County, which received more than $1.3 million.

Additionally, Holloway said, Buena Vista received nearly $500,000.

Most other eligible areas were awarded substantially smaller amounts.
