PARENTS: CHECK VACCINATION RECRODS

Children entering school for the first time this fall must have immunizations and must have completed a physical examination, according to state law.

Physicians and local health departments can vaccinate children and provide the certification that parents must file with a child's school. In addition, children entering school for the first time must have a physical examination completed within the last year.

A physical examination form must be on file with the school or parents must make an appointment for an examination before a child can attend school.

In a change to vaccination requirements, any child entering school for the first time this year must have a second measles vaccination, according to a news release from the Roanoke school system.

State law requires any kindergartner or first-grader who has not received the required second vaccination by the first day of school to be immunized within 90 days of the opening of school. Students entering preschool must be immunized before they enter kindergarten.

For further information on vaccinations, city residents may call the Roanoke Health Department, 857-7600; Botetourt County residents may call 473-8240. Roan0oke County has two offices providing vaccinations, one in Vinton, 857-7804, and one in Salem, 387-5530.
