NEW RIVER PEOPLE

The Rev. Charles Lutz has been selected as disaster chairman for the Montgomery County chapter of the American Red Cross. Lutz replaces Alan Raflo, who served as chairman from 1992 to 1995. Raflo is now disaster community education volunteer.

Other volunteers and chairmen at the Red Cross include Jim Moore, assistant disaster chairman; James Bond, newsletter editor; Richard Stanford, disaster and training volunteer coordinator; Mary Ellen Moore, mass care/foods; Onida Burleson, health services.

Jerry Perry has been appointed Area 2 Governor for several Toastmaster clubs in the New River Valley.

Perry, director of food services at Radford University, recently completed two terms as president of the New River Phoenix Toastmasters Club. He is vice-president for education. Perry is a member of the Western Virginia 3-Letter Toastmasters Club, an advanced club for Toastmasters in the New River Valley.

As Area 2 Governor, Perry will coordinate these Toastmaster clubs: New River Phoenix, Christiansburg, Radford Army Ammunition Plant and the Western Virginia 3-Letter.

Chris Crawford was recently named Christiansburg/Blacksburg Activity Center Coordinator for the 1995 Jerry Lewis Stars Across America Labor Day Telethon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Crawford is president of the Christiansburg Jaycees.

The following were recently elected officers of the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery County.

Sandy Smith, president; John Lipsey, first vice president; Sue Bentley, second vice president; Tom Murphy, treasurer; and Carl Burke, secretary.

Robert Hall, a deputy with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in Christiansburg, recently received a Department of Defense certificate of appreciation for support of the National Guard at the Christiansburg Armory.

The award recognizes individuals who are supportive employers of guardsmen and reservists. Hall was nominated for the award by Sgt. Cecil Richardson, who is a rifle team leader in 1st Platoon at the Christiansburg Armory.

James Faiszt, retired professor of horticulture at Virginia Tech, was the guest speaker at the most recent Southside Garden Club meeting. Faiszt talked about and demonstrated mechanics and design techniques for flower arranging.

Several garden club members received ribbons at the meeting. Donna Ludwig, Darlene Simpson and Margaret Stoeckle received blue ribbons for artistic design. Blue ribbons for horticulture were won by Joyce Beliveau, Ludwig, Anne Robinson and Simpson.

Club members also voted to present Scott Simpson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Simpson, with a $100 check as partial tuition to attend Nature Camp this summer. The camp is sponsored by the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs.
