WILLIAMSON, MOYERS ADVANCE

Claude Williamson dispatched defending champ Moss Beecroft, and medalist Bob Moyers won both his matches Thursday to advance to today's final of the 44th annual Virginia Seniors championship.

Williamson defeated Beecroft 3 and 1 during their morning match over The Homestead's Cascade course. In his afternoon match, the Waynesboro man defeated Roanoke's Ned Baber 3 and 1.

Moyers, who won the tournament's medalist honors, defeated 1989 winner Henry Kerfoot of McLean, 3 to 2 in the morning battle and defeated Jimmy Kite of Wolftown 4 and 3 in the afternoon contest.

Williamson, a 56-year-old insurance agent who briefly tried the PGA Senior tour, never lost a hole to Beecroft in winning the first and 12th with par-4s and finishing off his opponent with a par-5 on 17.

Against Baber, Williamson squandered an early 3-up advantage to lead by a single hole after the 11th. He then won the 12th and 13th. After dropping the 15th to Baber, Williamson again finished off the match at 17 with a par.

Moyers was 3-up at the turn against Kerfoot, who then birdied the 11th to cut the margin. Moyers moved back to 3-up with an eagle on 12, and the match ended after the next three holes were halved.

Against Kite, Moyers jumped to 4-up after nine. Kite birdied 10 and 11, but Moyers responded with a birdie at 12 and a winning par on 15 to close out the match.

Connie Sellers of Roanoke, winner of the regular state amateur championship in 1951, and Arval Rexrode of Waynesboro advanced to the finals of the Virginia Super Seniors championship reserved for players 70 and older.

Sellers stopped Steve Holpe of Roanoke 4 and 3, while Rexrode produced a 3-and-2 victory over Jim Gunn of Alexandria.
