NEWPORT NEWS - An ex-policeman cab driver chased down a man accused of rape and helped police capture him.
``The police department feels that the cab driver acted in a real courageous manner,'' said Officer Bobby Kipper, a Newport News police spokesman.
Police said a woman flagged down Steven J. Westlin early Wednesday. The woman told Westlin she had been raped, and Westlin took off in pursuit of the man who she said attacked her.
When the suspect's car drove into an apartment complex, Westlin, a former Williamsburg police officer, blocked the complex's only exit with his cab. Charles Poole, 25, was trapped in the parking lot until police arrived to arrest him.

Indictment: Doctor wrote off Ferrari
NORFOLK - A Chesapeake obstetrician bought a red Ferrari sports car, then claimed on his income tax form the purchase was for an ultrasound machine, a federal grand jury indictment charged.
Dr. Javaid A. Perwaiz is charged with six counts of signing and filing false tax returns in 1988 and 1989. If convicted, he faces up to 18 years in prison.
The indictment handed up Thursday in U.S. District Court in Norfolk said Perwaiz classified several personal purchases as business expenses, then listed the claims as deductions on his corporate tax returns. The false claims totaled more than $158,300, the indictment said.

Worker accused of faking robbery
MARTINSVILLE - A restaurant worker has been charged with filing a false report and embezzlement in what police are calling a hoax to steal money from the restaurant.
Edward Maurice Hunt, 20, of Axton was charged Friday with the crimes stemming from the theft of a large sum of money from a Dairy Queen, said Sgt. Kimmy Nester of the Henry County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities said Hunt called the sheriff's office Wednesday and said he had been robbed while alone at the restaurant. Hunt said he was bound with electrical tape and forced into a walk-in refrigerator while a robber took a night deposit that Hunt was to take to the bank. Nestor said officers recovered $1,090.
Hunt was released from the Henry County Jail on $2,500 bond Friday.
A second suspect, Michael Rufus Seay, 24, of Collinsville, is charged with grand larceny in connection with the case.

Suit filed to preserve Civil War battlefield
CHARLOTTESVILLE - A preservationist group is suing to block construction of a Formula One racetrack on a Civil War battlefield in Culpeper.
In the lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Charlottesville, the Brandy Station Foundation says a permit issued by the Army Corps of Engineers to racetrack developer Benton Ventures Inc. would harm the environment and important historic property.
About 18,000 Confederate and Union horsemen fought to a draw June 9, 1863, at Brandy Station, the largest cavalry battle in U.S. history.
``We want to ... let any potential investor and [the developer] know that the foundation is very serious about doing whatever is possible to prevent construction,'' said Michael Green, a foundation director.
