VIRGINIA'S STATE PRISONS

(and where others might be)

Virginia has 21 state prisons in the pipeline, and wants to contract with private prison companies to build others.

Sites haven't been selected for five of those 21 prisons - two detention centers slated for 1996, a maximum-security prison scheduled for 1999 and two high-medium security prisons pegged to pen in 2000 and 2001.

The state hopes to have seven private prisons built between 1997 and 2005, but it's not yet known which companies - and therefore, which sites - will be awarded contracts.
