LEWIS LEADS HIT PARADE FOR HOKIES

Defensive end Lawrence Lewis wreaked havoc with four sacks, but he couldn't disrupt the passing of Jim Druckenmiller on Saturday night at Lane Stadium in Virginia Tech's third preseason football scrimmage of the season.

Lewis, a senior from Hampton, finished with 10 tackles, and junior college transfer Myron Newsome added two sacks and two other tackles for losses.

Druckenmiller, a junior, completed 13 of 18 passes for 180 yards and one touchdown - a 14-yard toss to tight end Bryan Jennings. Backup Al Clark was 8-of-12 for 153 yards, with a 24-yard scoring pass to former Alleghany High School standout Todd Wheatley.

Fullback Marcus Parker from Salem led the ground game with 45 yards on three carries.

The Hokies open the regular season Sept.7 against Boston College in Blacksburg.

In Lexington, senior wideout Timmy Williams caught five passes for 79 yards to help spark the Red team over the White team 40-7 at Alumni Memorial Field in VMI's final preseason scrimmage.

VMI opens the season at 1 p.m. Saturday in Richmond.

The Under-18 Roanoke Star White boys' soccer team won two games during the first day of competition at the Virginia Cup in Richmond. Jonathan Seale, Patrick Baritt, William Watkins and Russell Hutchinson each scored as the Star defeated the Columbia (S.C.) Patriots 4-2. Andy Newton scored two goals and Hutchinson and Chris Hewitt each added one as Roanoke beat Herndon United 4-0.

More than 115 WKA karters from a 12-state area battled for national honors in the first event of its type held at New River Valley Speedway in Radford. Jamie Doss of Danville took first place in the Limited Modified division as the only Virginian taking a top honor. Seven class winners were form North Carolina, while South Carolina karters recorded five first-place finishes.
