BARNETT, Clair Caudill, 84, of Salem, went to be with the Lord, Friday, August 25, 1995. Mrs. Barnett was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and had worked at Stuart-McGuire in the Shipping Dept. She was preceded in death by her husband of many years, Walter E. Barnett. Surviving family include a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley B. and Jack R. Cooper, Salem; grandchildren, Patricia Jarrett, Bassett, Sandra McKinney, Salem and Steve Cooper, Roanoke; great-grandchildren, Crystal Jarrett, Brian Jarrett, Sean Jarrett and Patrick McKinney; brother, Roy E. Caudill, Roanoke; two sisters, Arabell Caudill, of New Hamphshire, Mamie C. Rowland, Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem on Monday, August 28, 1995 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Virgil McHone and the Rev. R. Stuart Carlton officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. BARTON, Vivien Harris, 79, of Roanoke, died Friday, August 25, 1995. Mrs. Barton was the widow of Sidney O. Barton and is survived by a son, Claude Emmett Barton, Roanoke; a brother, Edgar P. Harris, Warren, Rhode Island; grandson, Duane Barton; granddaughter, Nicki Ferguson; two sisters-in-law, Clara Harris and Patricia Harris, all of Roanoke. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, August 28, 1995 at Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton. The Rev. Carter Sloan will officiate. BLANKENSHIP, John Walter Jr., 67, of Staffordsville, died Friday, August 25, 1995. Mr. Blankenship was a retired coal miner and a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in WWII. Mr. Blankenship was born in Canebreak, W.Va. on August 25, 1928 and was a son of Lucile Christian Blankenship and the late John Walter Blankenship Sr. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Blankenship. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Carroll Blankenship, Eggleston; two sons, Danny Blankenship, Baltimore, Md.,, Richard Blankenship, Staffordsville; one daughter, Kathy Graham, Princeton, W.Va.; a daughter-in-law, Maryily Edwards, Ripplemead; mother, Lucile Dunnigan, Staffordsville; brother, Jimmy Blankenship, Essex, Md.; four grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the Givens Funeral Chapel, Pearisburg, with the Rev. Darrell Childress and the Rev. Lester Shelton officiating, with entombment in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, W. Va. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

BOWLES, Tillie S., 94, of Roanoke, died Friday, August 25, 1995 in a local nursing home. She was the widow of Charlie Lee Bowles Sr. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary B. Altice and son, Charlie Lee Bowles Jr. She was a member of Fairmont Baptist Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Leo and Viva Bowles, Bent Mountain; daughter-in-law, Judy Bowles, Boones Mill; three grandchildren, Margaret Shepherd, Bent Mountain, Leola Hoback, Bent Mountain and Rodney Bowles, Boones Mill; five great-grandchildren; sister, Bertha Shockey, Roanoke. Funeral services will be held at Fairmont Baptist Church 2 p.m. Monday , with the Rev. Horace Light and the Rev. Gary Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. BROWN, Carol Sue, 43, of Marion, died Saturday, August 26, 1995 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William (``Bill"") Brown; two sisters, Wanda Breedlove and Mary Jett, all of Marion; a brother, Billy Brown, Wytheville; three nephews; one niece; a host of loving and dear friends and several aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 28 at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joe Powers officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. BROWN, Clarence Burnell, (``Scrappy""), 75, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, August 24, 1995. Funeral services will be held 1 pm. Tuesday at Jerusalem Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel.

CHOMICKI, Dr. Joseph, 76, of Salem, died Friday, August 25, 1995. He was born May 28, 1919 in Brzezany, Poland. Mr. Chomicki was in the 11th Signal Battalion, serving HQ of the 2nd Polish Corp. under command of the Eighth British Army, which functioned throughout Europe and North Africa. He lived in the portion of Poland that was taken by Russia when Germany and Russia invaded Poland in 1939, Rohatyn, Poland. When Germany invaded Russia, he was drafted into the Red Army. Then put in forced labor, 850th Construction Battalion for two years, this included Siberia and many other work places. Liberated from forced labor due to British government and Russian agreement to have Polish nationals serve under British command. He then joined the 2nd Polish Corp while in Russia, then transferred to Pursia (Iran), then to the Middle East and Palistine and North Africa, then to Italy. After the war, he entered the University of Bologna Medical School, where he graduated December 1959. Mr. Chomicki came to the U. S. A. February 7, 1952, where he performed internship in Louisville, Ky. In June, 1953, he came to Catawba Sanatorium, where he worked for two years. He took another internship at Roanoke Memorial in 1955, then to Beckley, W. Va. for one year. He returned to Catawba in 1957, where he specialized in the treatment of TB until 1972. After Catawba, he went to the Roanoke City Health Dept. until his retirement in October 1986. He met his late wife, Teresa Sacchi Chomicki, in 1944 in Fermo, Italy. They were married September 21, 1946. She passed away March 25, 1994. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Alex and Helen Chomicki, Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Fabio and Donna Chomicki, Lenoir City, Tenn.; daughter, Barbara C. Parker, Roanoke; six grandchildren; sister, Elzbieta Biernacka, of Szczecin, Poland; sister-in-law, Kuzimiera Chomicki, Warszawa, Poland. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, August 28, 1995 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem, with Father Gregory Kandt officiating. Entombment will follow in Saint Andrew's Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

DANIELS, John Andrew, 57, of Route 5, Bedford, died Saturday, August 26, 1995. He was born in Pike County, Kentucky on June 8, 1938, a son of the late Ray Daniels and Ethel Mounts Daniels. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Robert R. Daniels, Irvan J. Daniels, William Daniels, Edward E. Daniels and Clifford G. Daniels. He was employed by Citty Ford, Inc. as a body shop technician. He is survived by two daughters, Trilby Daniels, Boonesboro, Tamara D. Lacy, Bedford; five brothers, Thomas M. Daniels, Roanoke, Eldo O. Daniels, Clifton D. Daniels, Douglas M. Daniels, all of Bedford, and Van J. Daniels of Forest; four sisters, Hazel Peverall and Barb ara Daniels, both of Bedford, Shirley Harris, Nashville, Tenn., Pricilla Vaughan, Bedford; three grandchildren, Benjamin Scott and Brash Smith, Boonesboro,and Cody Lacy of Bedford. DOYLE, Hattie Ratliff, 88, of Roanoke, passed wasy Saturday, August 26, 1995 in a local hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alva B. Doyle Sr. She is survived by her two sons, Alva B. Doyle Jr. and wife, Dot, Roanoke, Gerald Ray Doyle, and wife, Carolyn, Roanoke; two daughters, Eunice P. Doyle, Roanoke, Betty D. Curley and husband, Philip, Severna Park, Md.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Joe Ratliff, Roanoke. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Monday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. GEORGE, Mary Frances, 87, of Radford, passed away Friday, August 25, 1995 at her home. She was a charter member of the Central United Methodist Church in Radford, a member of the Inglewood Garden Club, the Business and Professional Women's Club and the Thursday Night Bridge Club. Mrs. George was retired, after 26 hears, with the Leggett Department Store in Radford. Surviving are her husband, Roscoe F. George; daughters, Frances George Reed, Dallas, Texas and Andrea George Stimpson, Winston-Salem, N.C.; four grandchildren, Ken Hine, Cris Hine, Andrew Stimpson and Samuel Stimpson; four great-grandchildren, Emma Hine, Jessie Frances Hine, Sarah Jane Hine and Laura Lee Stimpson. GRANT, Henry L., 77, of Tallahassee, Florida died Friday, August 25, 1995 on his birthday. A native of Amherst County, he had lived in Florida for the past eight years. Mr. Grant is survived by one daughter, Janet Lee Smith; one son, Richard L. Grant, both of Florida; one sister, Dorothy Booth, Vinton; two brothers, Larry and Billy Grant, both of Salem; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. JOHNSON, Maggie L., of Christiansburg, passed away Friday, August 25, 1995 in her home. Mrs. Johnson was born March 20, 1913 in Lindside, W.Va., to the late William Chapman and Hulda Parks. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Johnson, a son, Douglas Leon Johnson and a daughter, Cora Juanita Johnson. KEFFER, Minnie Exie, 90, of Ripplemead, passed away Saturday, August 26, 1995 in the ICF Unit at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. She was born in Pembroke on February 9, 1905 to the late Grellie Cromer and Lula Jane Riggs Martin. She was preceded in death by her husband Elbert Lee Keffer and a daughter Frances Lee Keffer, and was a member of Riverview Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Janie and Willie Smith of Pembroke, Lorene and Omer Lee Meadows of Blacksburg, Mary Catherine and Don Williams of Bluefield, Va., and Marian Lowe E ppard of Ruckerville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lane and Loraine Keffer of Pearisburg and Martin and Donna Keffer of Newport; one brother, Shular Martin of Pembroke; two sisters, Naomi Greer of Welch, W.Va. and Elizabeth Adams of Gate City; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. KOSTECKY, John, 78, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, August 26, 1995 in a local hospital. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. Mr. Kostecky retired from ITT and was a member of St. Andrews Church. He was preceded in death by his wives, Irene G. Kostecky and Eunice K. Kostecky. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Rita K. and Carl H. Christian, Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Judy A. Kostecky, Troutville; granddaughter, Shay Payne and husband Michael, Roanoke; great-granddaughter, McKinsey Allen Payne; brothers, Emil Kostecky and wife Rose, Ramsey, N.J., George Kostecky and wife Betty, Mahwah, N.J.; three nephews; also surviving are step daughters, Delores Wis eley and husband Michael, Roanoke, Vickie Bushnell, Virginia Beach; step grandchildren, Carla Bushnell and Craig Bushnell; and a devoted nurse, Donna Buckner. MACHERAS, Demetra Vahlas, 95, of Lexington, died Saturday, August 26, 1995 in the Stonewall Jackson E.C.F. Mrs. Macheras was born January 25, 1900 in Vamvacou, Greece. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Roanoke and attended the Grace Presbyterian Church in Lexington. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Macheras and two sons, George and Tommy Macheras. Mrs. Macheras and her husband operated Jimmy's Sandwich Shop on Washington Street for many years and was affectionately known as ``Mom"" by all of her customers. Surviving are her son, Ted Macheras, Lexington; son and daughter-in-law, John and Jo Ann Macheras, Cocoa, Fla.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, including two nieces and one nephew in South Africa; also surviving are three sisters and one brother in Greece and a brother in Australia. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 1995 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Father Nicholas Bacalis and the Rev. Paul Carter officiating. MAYO, Garnett Long, 85, of Natural Bridge Station, died Saturday, August 26, 1995 at the home of her son, Michael Mayo. Born in Alleghany Co., February 28, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Emmanuel Long and Lettie Sullivan Long. Mrs. Mayo was a member of Broad Creek A.R.P. Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Gean Warren Mayo Sr. and one son, Bernard (Bud) Mayo. Surviving are four daughters, Theresa M. Webb, Albuquerque, NM, Frances J. France, Bay Minette, Al., Wanda E. Reid, natural Bridge Station, Ann M. Moore, Bryantown, Md.; seven sons, Gene W. Mayo Jr., Natural Bridge Station, Clarence E. Mayo, Tampa, Fla., Wayne Mayo, Hopewell, William M. Mayo, Glasgow, James (Donnie) Mayo, Glasgow, Michael Mayo, Buena Vista, John K. MORRISON, Robert Leech, 85, of Troutville, died Friday, August 25, 1995, at the Brian Center Nursing Care. He was born December 29, 1909, in Rockbridge County a son of the late J. Wilson and Margaret Hull Morrison. He was a 33 Mason and was a member of Boone Masonic Lodge #247 A.F. & A.M., Lakeland Masonic #190 A.F. & A.M., Webber High 12 Masonic Lodge #282 A.F. & A.M., Past District Deputy Grand Master for the 22nd Masonic District, Roanoke Scottish Rite Bodies, Kazim Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Murray Royal Arch Chapter #22, Bayard Commandery #15 and Electra Chapter #33 Order of the Eastern Star. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Opal McClure Morrison of Troutville; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. Jr. and Rebecca J. Morrison of Fincastle; several nieces and nephews; and the Brian Center family of Fincastle. Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 27, 1995, at 2 p.m. at the Rader Troutville Chapel with Dr. Harry Y. Gamble officiating. OLIVER, Marguerite, of Roanoke, wife of the late Hubert J. Oliver, went to be with the Lord Friday, August 25, 1995, following a brief illness. She was a life-long member of Oakland Baptist Church. REED, Clovis Clive, 89, of Christiansburg passed away Saturday, August 26, 1995 at Vir ginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke. He was a member of the White Rock Church of The Brethren, a World War II veteran, and a lifetime member of the DAV and VFW. He was preceded in death by a son, Junior Fount Reed. Survivors include, his wife, Hattie Altizer Reed, Christiansburg; one son, James Clyde Reed, Christiansburg; two daughters and one son-in-law, Faye and Roderick West, and Mary Alice Reed and Cletis Sartin, all of Christiansburg; two granddaughters, Kayla Reed and Gina West; two grandsons, Tim Reed and Jason West; three sisters-in-law, Lettie Reed, Christiansburg, Velma Reed, Alum Ridge, French Hogan, Roanoke; one brother-in-law, Aaron Altizer, Floyd. SEXTON, Thomas Jackson, (``Jack""), 66, of Marion, died Friday, August 25, 1995 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was an electronic operator at Brunswick, Inc. for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Glenna Sturgill Sexton, Marion; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Dallas Cassell, Bristol; a son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Connie Sexton, Marion; a son, Tommy Sexton, Marion; four sisters, Florence Funk, Maxine Blevins, and Kate Farley, all of Marion, and Maudie Faye, Portsmouth; one brother, Fletcher Sexton, Rising Sun, Md.; two grandchildren; one step grandson; and one great-granddaughter. SHELOR, Evie Sawers, 90, of Roanoke, died Saturday, August 26, 1995. She was the widow of George W. Shelor and was a member of First Church of the Brethren. Surviving are her sisters, Mrs. Ruth S. STULTZ, Benjamin F., (``Ben""), 83, of Roanoke, died Friday, August 25, 1995 at South Roanoke Nursing Home. He was past president of both the Roanoke Businessman's Club and Williamson Road Lion's Club, a member of the Williamson Road Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and the Kazim Temple. Surviving are his wife, Nova H. Stultz; a daughter and son-in-law, Chrystella and Ed Alvarado, Annandale; two grandchildren, Marcie L. Alvarado, Eastern Maryland, Ben Alvarado, Washington, D.C.; a brother, Raymond Stultz, Buchanan; sister, Natalie Powell, Louisville, KY.; also several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, August 28,1995 in Fairview Cemetery, with Dr. Harry Y. Gamble and the Rev. F. Tupper Garden officiating. TURNER, Juanita N., 77, of Roanoke, died Saturday, August 26, 1995 at Lewis Gale Hospital. She was a native of Riner, Va. and had been a long-time Roanoke resident. She retired from Peacock Salem Laundry and Cleaners with over 40 years of service. She was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband James Kemper Turner. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia T. and Bobby P. Barker of Roanoke; grandchildren, James Philpott and Jennifer Sink; a brother, Jeff Nolley of Christiansburg; sisters, Helen Palmer and Katie Willard both of Christiansburg; great-grandchildren, Korie and Troy Philpott and Angel Sink. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 29, at 11 a.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem with the Rev. Louis Timmons officiat ing. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Monday at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

WILLIAMS, Charles Lewis, (``Lou""), 61, of Speedwell, died Saturday morning, August 26, 1995 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olivia Sayers Williams and his parents, James E. and Janie Dix Williams. He is survived by five sisters and brothers-in-law, Katherine and Jim Callahan, Wytheville, Janie and Carl Harmon, Max Meadows, Bertha and Danny Underwood, Draper, Ruby and Johnny Tickle, Draper, Edna and Ricky Parks, Wytheville; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Agnes Williams, Wytheville, Jim and Janie Williams, Rural Retreat, Joe and Jean Williams, North Ridgeville, Ohio, John and Dollie Williams, Wytheville, George and Mary Ann Will iams, Bluefield, W. Va.; one great-aunt, Mary Jane King; and several aunts and uncle, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Douglas Stuart, with interment to follow in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. WOOD, Louise, 86, of Route 1, Box 16 (Harry Heights) Bluefield, W. Va., died Friday, August 25, 1995 in a Bluefield hospital. Born in Radford, Va., she was the daughter of the late John Scott Roberts and Ella Helm Roberts, formerly of Moorman Ave. in Roanoke, Va. She moved to Welch ,W.Va. in 1931 and to Bluefield in 1953. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bluefield, Church Circle #1 and the Evening Primrose Garden Club. She worked at the Bluefield Office of the Mercer County Sheriff's Department and Sate Department of Highways in Princeton, prior to her retirement in 1971. She was pr eceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Survivors include her husband, Earl Wood, of the home; daughter, Marilyn Wood Lackey, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two grandsons, William Lawrence (Larry) Lackey, Charleston, W. Va., Michael David Lackey, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Nicole, William and Robby. Funeral services will be conducted 6 p.m. Sunday from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel in Bluefield, with Dr. W. D. Hasty Jr. officiating. Graveside services will follow Monday at 2 p.m. from the Fairview Cemetery in Roanoke, Va.
