WYTHEVILLE - A Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program has been started this year in Wythe County schools.
It will be led by Lt. Col. Brooks J. Breece, senior U.S. Army instructor, and 1st Sgt. Vernon L. White, Army instructor.
Superintendent James Vaught said participants in the program will learn the responsibilities that go with citizenship.
"We're not teaching them to be soldiers, we're teaching them to be citizens," he said. "We're real excited about this program and glad to have this in place."
Wythe lawyers seek new courthouse
WYTHEVILLE - The Wythe County Bar Association has asked the county Board of Supervisors to start a long-term comprehensive plan for reconstructing the entire county courthouse.
Association President Frank Slavin has told the board that well-intentioned but piecemeal additions to the building over the years have destroyed its beauty and architectural integrity.
The association is asking that a committee be formed to offer its ideas during reconstruction plans, with membership including county lawyers, judges, clerk's office, sheriff's office, the Wythe County Historical Society and other interested parties.
New plans OK'd for Peppers Ferry Rd.
WYTHEVILLE - Location and design plans for 6.5 miles of Virginia 610 (Peppers Ferry Road) from east Wytheville to Virginia 1006 at Max Meadows have been approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board.
Improvements include widening the road, eliminating sharp curves, improving sight distance, widening a bridge over Cove Creek and building a new bridge over Jackson's Creek.
The work will be done in three segments, starting in the fall with a 2.2-mile section from a mile east of the road's intersection with Virginia 657 to about a mile west of Virginia 716.
The second segment will be two miles from that point to slightly west of Virginia 1006 in Max Meadows.
No schedule for building the third section, 2.3 miles from the east corporate limits of Wytheville to a mile east of the road's intersection with Virginia 647, has been established because funding is not yet available.
Hillsville changing traffic patterns
HILLSVILLE - Traffic patterns around Hillsville will be changed starting Friday to try and ease congestion during the annual Labor Day Weekend Flea Market and Gun Show, which draws as many as 300,000 people to the area.
The show will continue through Sept. 4.
To simplify traffic movement during those four days, no left turns or "right on red" turns will be allowed from U.S. 52 onto U.S. 58 and 221 in Hillsville. Electronic message boards at the intersection of U.S. 52 and Virginia 148 at Fancy Gap will instruct motorists entering Hillsville to use Interstate 77. No parking will be allowed in the median of U.S. 58 from Interstate 77 to the town limits.
Parking and shuttle bus service into the flea market area will be available at the intersection of U.S. 58 and Virginia 808 South. Additional parking will be available at the Hillsville VFW Building on U.S. 52 in town, as well as in many private lots.
For motorists not attending the event, alternate routes around Hillsville will be marked with electronic message boards and regular signs. "Because we have such a dramatic increase in visitors to Hillsville for this event, I would suggest that anyone not attending the flea market avoid the area altogether," said Bob Beasley, assistant resident engineer for Carroll County.
