The car Donald Stephen Severa Jr. was driving crossed the centerline of Virginia 757 about half a mile north of Virginia 635 at 7:50 a.m. and struck an oncoming car, said M.O. Vosburgh, a Virginia State Police dispatcher in Salem. The youth died at the scene.
The other driver, Robert Wayne Ferris, 49, of Goodview, had minor injuries, police said.
It appeared that the teen-ager had fallen asleep while driving home from a job as a grocery stock hand, Trooper G.R. Snead said.
The impact dislodged a fishing boat Ferris was towing, which skidded 70 yards away from where Ferris' car came to rest beyond an embankment. Ferris' car caught fire.
