SALEM STILL LOOKING FOR A MIRACLE

The numbers say the Salem Avalanche still has a chance to catch the Kinston Indians in the chase for the second-half title of the Carolina League's Southern Division.

Common sense says otherwise.

The Avalanche, down 4 games to the Indians after Sunday's 7-2 loss at Frederick, need a miracle as they play the last six games of the season at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Salem takes on Northern Division kingpins the Wilmington Blue Rocks for three games before closing out the campaign with three against the Lynchburg Hillcats.

When last the Avalanche and Blue Rocks met, the teams split four games in Salem last week.

Tonight, Salem left-hander Doug Million (4-6, 4.49 ERA) opposes Wilmington's Tim Byrdak (11-4, 2.04), one of the league's most dominating pitchers.

The Avalanche had won three out of four going into Sunday, the loss being an 11-0 six-hit setback to the Keys. It was the Avalanche's 13th shutout loss this year.

That game cooled off Salem second baseman Vicente Garcia, who went hitless. Garcia was still nine for his last 11,including the game-winning homer in Salem's 6-4 extra-inning victory over the Blue Rocks Thursday.
