FOSTER, FREDERICK SHACKLE SALEM

Jim Foster drove in four runs and Frederick took advantage of six unearned runs to knock off the Salem Avalanche 7-2 on Sunday afternoon in Carolina League action in Salem's last road contest of the year.

Salem's loss combined with a rainout of the Kinston-Winston-Salem game leaves the Avalanche four games out of first place with six games remaining.

Frederick (30-33) scored four unearned runs in the first inning off Salem starter Brent Crowther. Trovin Valdez and David Lamb each walked to lead off the inning. David Dellucci then grounded to first where Colin Dixon fielded it, but threw errantly to second while trying to get Lamb. With the bases loaded, Foster smacked a two-run single to right which allowed Valdez and Lamb to score for a 2-0 lead. Salem right-fielder Mark Wells' throwing error allowed Foster and Dellucci to move up to second and third, respectively .

Dellucci scored the Keys' third run on a passed ball and Roy Hodge's groundout scored Foster with the Keys' fourth unearned run of the inning.

The Keys tacked on another run in the fourth when Hodge and Jeff Michael each singled to put runners at the corners with no outs. After Chris Kirgan struck out and Michael was thrown out trying to steal, Jesse Garcia hit a flyball that Brian Culp dropped which allowed Hodge to score and give Frederick a 5-0 lead.

Salem (31-33) scored its only two runs in the sixth inning on Edgard Velasquez's two-run homer off Frederick starter Gary White which cut the lead to 5-2.

Frederick answered those two runs with two in the seventh. Lamb led off by hitting a grounder that Chris Sexton could not field for an error. After Dellucci walked, Foster drilled a two-run double to provide the final margin.

Crowther (3-6) took the loss, going five innings and giving up five runs - one earned - on five hits while walking three and striking out seven. White (1-0) picked up his first win as a Key.
