In the spring, Lynn Hill, an administrator at the center, traveled to Reggio Emilia, a town in north-central Italy that is noted for its schools for young children. Hill learned that schools there emphasize aesthetic detail and create a learning curriculum that stems from the children's interests.
"It's the kind of philosophy that really feels right with the kids," Hill said. "They love it, and we love it."
As the kids play, the adults pay close attention to the themes that emerge, then incorporate those themes into lessons.
"Play is child's work, and when children are playing and engaged in something they feel good about, they are willing to take risks to learn," Hill said.
The center will conduct a half-day program using the Reggio technique this fall. Registration is open now.
