Virginia Tech

Ravi Krishnamurthy of Blacksburg recently received a Ph.D. in mathematics from Virginia Tech. Krishnamurthy received his bachelor's degree from the University of Madrid and his master's degree also from Virginia Tech. He plans to continue working as a software engineer at Siemens Inc. in Roanoke.

Radford resident Anne Barnard graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in May. During the ceremony, she was awarded the James R. Cash Pathology Book Award and the Samuel Michael Brooke Memorial Award.

Barnard also was a Norfolk Foundation Florence Smith Memorial Scholar and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society.

Barnard received her bachelor's degree in 1991 from Wake Forest University, where she was a Carswell Scholar and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa and Mortar Board.

A graduate of Radford High School, she is the daughter of Jack and Susan Barnard.

Pamela Sue Speed graduated with high honors from Midlands Technical College in Columbia, S.C., with an associate degree in health science and dental hygiene. She is a member of Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.

Speed received a bachelor's degree in interior design from Virginia Tech in 1991.

A 1991 graduate of Christiansburg High School, Speed plans on working in Montgomery County. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Speed Jr. of Christiansburg.

A New River Community College instructor has been recognized with a certificate of appreciation for the exemplary manner that he has helped students with disabilities utilize computers, electronic reading devices and other forms of assistive technology.

Lee Oliver, an instructional center supervisor of the division of distance education and learning resources, was recognized by the newly-formed Network for Employment of People with Disabilities (NEPD) in New River Valley. Oliver's efforts have supported the organization's mission of promoting equal educational and employment opportunities for individuals with special needs.

Oliver has been at the college for 16 years. He lives in Christiansburg with his wife, Mary Ann, and their daughters, Tania and Doris Ann.

Deborah Pilkey, an engineering science and mechanics Ph.D student from Blacksburg, recently received a $5,000 fellowship from the Virginia Space Grant Consortium. The Consortium funds scholarships and fellowships to encourage research efforts by future researchers, scientists and advanced technology technicians.
