WOMAN HIT, KILLED BY CAR

A 41-year-old woman died late Sunday after being hit by a car while walking across three lanes of traffic on Interstate 81-77 near Fort Chiswell.

She was identified as Alice F. Toney of Lyons, Ill., a transient who had been staying in the Wytheville area.

Trooper J.L. Mullins said she was struck as she was walking in the center lane on the northbound side of the highway about 10:30 p.m. He identified the driver of the car as Robin Thunderburk, but didn't have an address.

Toney was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident happened about 500 feet south of U.S. 52 near the interstate's Fort Chiswell exit.
