The ceremony will start at 10 a.m. on the lawn in front of the Old Courthouse facing Main Street. The newly renovated brick courthouse is just behind it.
Former state Supreme Court Justice Alex Harman Jr. was to introduce Carrico, but will be unable to participate because of health reasons.
A Courthouses Committee planned the restoration of both buildings, following a fire at the end of 1989 in the historic stone courthouse. County voters approved a $2.9 million bond issue in 1991 to cover whatever insurance did not in restoring the Old Courthouse and expanding the brick one.
The brick courthouse was vacated in 1993, and all courts moved to temporary quarters in a renovated furniture building on East Main Street (Virginia 99). It was projected that they could return to the brick courthouse by mid-1994, but the job took longer than expected.
The courts recently moved back to their old building, now 28,500 square feet - 13,000 square feet larger than it was. General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts formerly had been housed in the stone courthouse, with Circuit Court in the brick courthouse. Now, all courts facilities will be in the same building.
