ASSOCIATE AD RECORD NO LONGER PLAYING AT UVA

KIM RECORD has accepted a position with Florida State as the Seminoles' senior women's administrator.

Kim Record, associate director of athletics since 1992, has become the second major Jim Copeland appointee to resign under new Virginia athletic director Terry Holland.

Record, a 1984 UVa graduate, has accepted a post as senior women's administrator at Florida State.

``We're disappointed to lose her,'' Holland said Tuesday. ``She does a lot of things, not all of which she received credit for. We were trying to find a different slot for her in which she would be responsible for her own area.''

Record's resignation comes two days before the official departure of Lawson Drinkard, executive director of the Virginia Student Aid Foundation.

Holland had approached Record about taking over Drinkard's job on at least an interim basis.

``I certainly would be concerned if people got the wrong impression here,'' Holland said. ``Neither was pushed out the door. It's obviously a big bite. I don't want to lose anybody else anytime soon.''

Record earlier had turned down an opportunity to join Copeland, who was Virginia's athletic director until December, when he resigned to become the AD at Southern Methodist.

``I knew there were strong ties to Jim,'' Holland said. ``Once we got through that, I felt she would be here for a while. But there was always that uncertainty about how things would turn out in the long run.

``My management style is different from Jim's, as was Craig's,'' said Holland, referring to Craig Littlepage, who served until July as interim AD. ``I think Kim was apprehensive about where she fit in. She knows and I know that she's more than just an administrative assistant.''

The position of senior women's administrator at Virginia is Jane Miller, who also coaches the women's lacrosse team.

``I think the position at Florida State is more along the lines of what she should be doing with her career,'' Holland said. ``I've told her, `Kim, I want you here. I just can't tell you exactly what you'll be doing.'

``I knew it would be a close call when Florida State got involved. I just don't have that flexibility at this time.''

Record, whose husband is a sportswriter for the Daily Progress in Charlottesville, will oversee external operations including promotions, sports information, marketing and TV-radio networks. She also will supervise six women's programs

``I cut my teeth at Virginia,'' she said. ``This is a bittersweet move, but when Dave Hart [Florida State's director of athletics] called, the position he put together was very unique.''

Record said Hart initiated the contact.

``One thing I've learned is, I can't control perceptions,'' she said, ``but I've made this decision for all the right reasons. Dave Hart could have called anybody. I'm really flattered that he called me.''
