Joe was a long-time member of the Salem Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an avid hot air balloon pilot. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy. Graveside services will be held in East Hill Cemetery, Salem, on Thursday, August 31, 1995, at 10 a.m., with the Reverend Robert T. Copenhaver officiating. MOOMAW, Lorana Tillman, 77, of Roanoke, passed away Monday evening, August 28, 1995, in a local hospital. She was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church and a retired teacher from Roanoke City Schools, having begun her teaching career in 1940 at William Byrd High School. She also taught at Southview Elementary School, Stonewall Jackson Jr. High School, and Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School, retiring in 1978. Miss Moomaw was a graduate of Longwood College and the University of Virginia, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Kappa Delta Pi, and the Roanoke Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are a niece, Ruth Nagy; a nephew, Michael Moomaw, both of Florida; a number of great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be c onducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with Dr. Charles G. Fuller officiating. Interment will follow in Fair View Cemetery. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church in Roanoke and was an Army World War II veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie D. Stacy. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Gloria Stacy; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and David Baer; grandchildren, Samantha, Jordan, and Dawn; a great-grandchild, Kayla; three sisters. She was born in Bland County, the daughter of the late George Thomas Thompson and Nan Newberry Thompson and was preceded in death by her sisters, Frances Thompson Hanks and Evelyn Thompson Johnson. She was a teacher at Highland Park School for many years and a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Farnham James Johnson, Winfield, Ala.; numerous cousins and many friends. WHITTEN, William Robert, 63, of Lexington, died Tuesday, August 29, 1995 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Salem. He was born May 3, 1932 in Rockbridge Co., and was the son of the late Henry Thomas Whitten and Ida Musser Whitten. Mr. Whitten was a member of Kerrs Creek Baptist Church and retired from Burlington Industries, Glasgow. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Montgomery Whitten and one brother, Lee Roy Whitten. Surviving are a daughter, Lori Lee Whitten, Lexington; three sisters, Ruth Whitten Fitzgerald, Buena Vista, Rebecca Whitten Falls, Buchanan, Ella Whitten Sisler, Lexington, Ky.; and one brother, Joseph Allen Whitten, Buena Vista.
