ROCKBRIDGE ENDS A 3-YEAR DROUGHT

Tonia Clements led the way with 23 points as Rockbridge County won for the first time in three seasons, routing Highland 69-26 on Thursday night in a non-district game in Lexington.

The victory was the first for second-year coach Melissa Fretwell, whose team went 0-21 a year ago.

Rockbridge County bolted to a 16-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back in the opener for both teams. Clements and freshman center Kate Ides combined for 19 points in the first half as Rockbridge County took a 34-13 lead.

William Byrd 69, Martinsville 68: Byrd came from behind to edge the Bulldogs in the William Byrd Invitational in what might have been a preview of the Region III or Group AA championship game a few months from now.

Byrd (2-0) trailed by 11 points with 6:27 left as Martinsville (1-1) used its speed and the shooting touch of Erica Brandon, last season's Sizzlin' Sophomore of the Year, who had scored 24 of her 25 game-high points to that point.

Then the Bulldogs started committing turnovers. Byrd crept back into the game slowly and took its first lead since the first quarter when Brandy Allen hit a fade-away jumper from 10 feet with 44 seconds left.

After Allen's shot, the Bulldogs made their eighth turnover and were forced to foul. Kelli Runyon hit two free throws with 12.8 seconds left to produce a three-point lead.

The Bullodgs' Takeshia Mitchell, a 5-foot-3 freshman who kept Byrd off balance with her quickness, and Brandon missed 3-point attempts before Melody Dallas hit a meaningless follow shot at the buzzer.

Floyd County 85, Patrick County 64: The Buffaloes outscored the Cougars by 17 points in the second and third quarters as Floyd County blasted Patrick County in the Lady Buffs Tipoff Tournamentto win its 58th consecutive game.

Melissa Cantrell led the reigning two-time Group A champions with a game-high 29 points, 15 of which came on three pointers, in addition to her seven assists, six rebounds and five steals. Julie Sowers poured in 16 points and six steals, and Jill Quesenberry scored 11 points.

Summer East led Patrick County with 13 points and Anatra Huff and Rachel Pendleton each added 10.

Patrick County will play Fieldale-Collinsville at 6 p.m. Saturday at Floyd County High School. Floyd will take on Blacksburg shortly after the first game, at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Fieldale-Collinsville 54, Blacksburg 45: Yvonne Hall scored 14 points in the second half as Fieldale-Collinsville escaped Blacksburg in the second day of the Lady Buffs' Tip-off Tournament in Floyd.

Hall led the Knights with a game-high 21 points, and T.J. Hayes added 15 for Cavaliers (1-1).

Blacksburg (1-1) was led by April Rogers' eight points. Bethany Johnston and Kelly Houghton each added seven points to aid the Indians' cause.

Fieldale-Collinsville will take on Patrick County tomorrow night at 6:00 followed by the Blacksburg-Floyd County contest at 7:30 p.m.

Bath County 47, Riverheads 34: In Hot Springs, Jennifer Adams poured in a game-high 16 points for the Chargers as they downed Riverheads in the season opener for both teams.

Adams, who also dished out six assists, recieved help from 6-foot-1 sophomore Katie Hardbarger, who pulled down seven rebounds and scored eight points. Melanie Woods added 12 points for Bath County (1-0).

Kara Hughes led the Gladiators (0-1) with 12 points and Leigh Bosserman added eight.

R.E. Lee-Staunton 45, Magna Vista 41: Lee (2-0) defeated Magna Vista in a closely contested game in the Lord Botetourt Invitational. Tanesia Kellam and Sandi Reid each had 15 points for the Warriors (0-2).

Radford 58, Carroll County 53: At Hillsville, Charlee Taylor scored 33 points to lead Radford to a 58-53 victory over Carroll County in the Lady Cavalier Tip-Off Tournament.

Crystal Hubbard added 20 points for the Bobcats (2-1). Carroll County (2-1) was led by Bethany Hill with 18 points

Christiansburg 38. Grayson County 35 Christiansburg built an early lead and held on to beat Grayson County in Lady Cavalier Tip-Off Tournament in Hillsville.

Lisa Dalton led Christiansburg (2-1) with 13 points and Kristen Habeeb added 10. Grayson County (0-3) was led by Lindsey Carico, who scored a game-high 17.

Narrows 48, Auburn 40: Junior Suzanne Webb scored 10 of her game-high 18 points in the second half to lead Narrows past Auburn in a non-district game in Narrows.

Shawsville 52, Bland 31: Shawsville used a 22- point outburst in the second quarter to defeat Bland in a non-district game in Shawsville.

Wednesday's game

Martinsville 61, Northside 38: Freshman Tekeshia Mitchell and sophomore Jamie Farrington had 12 points each to lead four scorers in double figures as the Bulldogs rolled past the Vikings in the William Byrd Invitational at William Byrd High School.
