TOURNAMENTS WILL CHALLENGE RU WOMEN

The Radford University women's basketball team, aiming for its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, will play in three regular-season tournaments this season.

The six-time Big South Conference champions will open at the Dial Soap Classic hosted by Old Dominion on Nov.25-26 and will play in Pepperdine's Malibu Classic on Dec.2-3 and the University of Cincinnati Tournament on Dec.29-30.

Radford has just nine home dates in its schedule, including non-conference games against Virginia Tech (Nov. 29) and Lafayette (Jan. 2) at the Dedmon Center. The Big South tournament will be played at Radford on March 6-9. (Complete schedule in Scoreboard.)

In other sports news in the region:

Ferrum was picked fourth in the Dixie Conference preseason men's soccer poll. Methodist was voted the team to beat. Methodist was picked first in the women's soccer poll; Ferrum was fifth.

Greensboro was voted the preseason favorite to win the Dixie Conference volleyball championship. Ferrum and Averett were tied for second in the voting.

Appalachian State was voted the Southern Conference's preseason favorite in men's cross country by the league's head coaches. VMI was picked eighth in the 10-team league. Furman was tabbed the favorite in women's cross country.

The VMI Keydet Club will hold a luncheon with football coach Bill Stewart on Sept. 7 at noon at the Jefferson Club in Roanoke.
