The plan, which will be presented for approval to the VHSL Executive Council later this month, sent the Piedmont District to Region IV.
Laurel Park and Fieldale-Collinsville have joined Seminole District members Altavista and William Campbell plus fellow Piedmont District schools Chatham and Dan River to petition the VHSL Executive Council to allow them to form the Group A South Central District in Region C. All these schools previously had opted to play up in Group AA.
``We are asking that either the Three Rivers, Mountain Empire or Hogoheegee District be placed in Region D so that we can come into Region C [as the fourth district],'' Laurel Park principal Charles Preston said. ``It's our position that if you're going to realign and reclassify at this time, schools that are legitimate Group A size and close enough to form a district should be allowed to do so.''
Laurel Park and Fieldale-Collinsville never expressed a desire to drop from the Group AA Piedmont District to Group A until a Region III meeting earlier this month. Altavista, William Campbell and Dan River never tried to drop until now while Chatham, with an enrollment of 511, is the last school listed in Group AA after the plan split the state's high schools into equal thirds.
``We were resigned to staying in Group AA because no one would form a district with us,'' Preston said. ``We'll live with whatever is decided.''
At least one appeal likely will be approved. Carroll County, a new member of the Piedmont District, wants to go to the Southwest District, a move that pleases everyone without upsetting the Region III-IV balance.
