I-81 HIT-AND-RUN VICTIM DIES

A man injured in a hit-and-run accident on Interstate 81 in Botetourt County on Wednesday died Thursday.

Henry C. Payne, 52, of Madison, N.C., died about 6 a.m. at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, state police said.

Payne was the driver of a car headed south on I-81 near Buchanan about 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to state police. A tractor-trailer in the left lane changed lanes and bumped Payne's car, sending it out of control. The car crossed the median and was slammed by an oncoming tractor-trailer.

Payne and his passenger were flown to Roanoke Memorial. No information was available on the passenger's condition.

State police are investigating the accident as a hit-and-run because the truck that changed lanes did not stop.
