VELASQUEZ ON CAROLINA ALL-STAR TEAM

Salem Avalanche center fielder Edgard Velasquez was named to the Carolina League's year-end All-Star team as selected by the league's managers, general managers and media representatives.

Velasquez, Salem's lone representative on the team, was batting .294 with 12 home runs and 64 RBI heading into Thursday night's game against the Lynchburg Hillcats.

Kinston took the top player awards, as the Indians' Richie Sexson was named the league's Most Valuable Player and Bartolo Colon was voted Pitcher of the Year. Wilmington's John Mizerock was named Manager of the Year.

Sexson, a right-handed hitting first baseman, was tied for the league lead in batting average (.311) and led the league with 82 RBI.

Colon, a right-hander, has been on the disabled list since Aug.2 but his 13 wins are second in the league.
