Assistant Superintendent Jim Sellers said an unidentified caller phoned in Friday morning, saying a bomb would detonate that afternoon.
Sellers said Blacksburg police and school administrators combed the school checking for an explosive device, and found nothing.
The state police and trained dogs were called in to double check the search, Sellers said. The dogs, the area's only canines trained to detect bombs, came from Bedford, so the search was expected to take two hours.
That was too long to leave the students standing outside the school, Seller said. So, the school sent students home about two hours before school normally ends.
As of Friday afternoon, no bombs had been found.
Blacksburg police are investigating the incident.
