RADFORD HANDS WHEELER LOSS

Larnell Lewis ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns Friday night, leading Radford to a 20-7 victory over Parry McCluer in a non-district opener in Buena Vista.

The loss spoiled the debut of the Fighting Blues' Charlie Wheeler, who took over this year for longtime Parry McCluer head coach Bob Williams.

Lewis' 1-yard run put the Bobcats up 6-0 in the second quarter.

Parry McCluer countered with its only scoring drive of the game. D.J. Douglas scored on a 7-yard and the point-after kick gave the Blues a 7-6 lead at halftime.

Radford, which outgained the hosts 263-98, took control in the second half. Lewis' 4-yard run made it 12-7 through three quarters. The Bobcats added a 1-yard scoring run by Tremond Hale and a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

Douglas had 52 yards rushing to pace the Blues.

Rockbridge County 12, Covington 7: In Covington, Jimmy Emore returned a fumble 37 yards for the game-winning score with 6:12 left as the Wildcats won an opener that was dominated statistically by the Cougars.

Rockbridge County scored its 12 points in the game's final 7:24. Emore's 2-yard run pulled Rockbridge County to 7-6, but the Wildcats missed the point-after kick.

On Covington's second play following that score, Emore ripped the ball away from a Cougars player and ran untouched into the end zone.

Covington, which got its only touchdown on Tom Luckett's 3-yard run in the second quarter, missed some early scoring opportunities and paid for it. The Cougars had 16 first downs to the Wildcats' four, had 279 yards of offense to Rockbridge's 105 and ran 67 plays to the Wildcats' 36.

Covington outgained Rockbridge on the ground 168 yards to 46.

Fort Chiswell 24, George Wythe 6: In Fort Chiswell, Gary Arnold ran for 161 yards and three touchdowns as the Pioneers won the non-district game and snapped a five-year losing streak against their county rivals.

Arnold scored on runs of 11, 1 and 4 yards as Fort Chiswell built an 18-0 lead. Adam Morgan, who threw for 112 yards, hit Michael White for an 18-yard scoring pass for the winners' final touchdown.

The Pioneers dominated throughout, outgaining the Maroons 375 yards to 125.

James River 20, Floyd County 0: The Knights used a big-play offense to break the open a non-district game and went on to a season-opening victory over the Buffaloes in Buchanan.

Shahan Burrell had a touchdown run of 58 yards in the first quarter and Brian LeFlore rumbled 51 yards for a third-quarter score to put away Floyd County.

Quarterback Travis Blankenship's 1-yard run put James River (1-0) on the board in the first quarter. After Burrell's scoring run, the Buffaloes failed on their best scoring attempt by fumbling on the James River 1-yard line late in the first quarter.

Burrell finished with 109 yards on 10 rushes and was in on 20 tackles from the linebacker spot. LeFlore rushed nine times for 104 yards.

Floyd County was led offensively by quarterback Craig Reed, who rushed for 52 yards and completed 11 of 26 passes for 97 yards.

Bath County 48, Craig County 0: In Hot Springs, the Chargers scored early and often as they opened defense of their Pioneer District title with a victory over an undermanned Rockets team.

Craig County, which brought only 15 players, finished with 62 yards of total offense and never penetrated the Bath County 35-yard line.

Pocahontas 18, Auburn 14: The Indians scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to edge the Eagles in non-district opener in Riner.

The bright spot for Galax was Shawn Bond's 85-yard touchdown run with the second-half kickoff.

Staunton River 30, Altavista 6: Kevin Martin ran for 127 yards and two scores before leaving the game with a twisted ankle in the second quarter, leading the Golden Eagles to victory in a Seminole District opener.

Martin scored on runs of 21 and 22 yards, and Jarrett Ferguson added an 18-yard touchdown scamper as Staunton River bolted to a 22-0 first-quarter lead.

Ferguson had 103 yards on 18 carries as the Golden Eagles outrushed the Colonels 264-8.

James Monroe (W.Va.) 14, Narrows 12: The Green Wave failed to deliver on a pair of two-point conversions in losing to the Mavericks in a non-district opener.

David Turner then scored for Narrows on an 18-yard run, but the pass attempt failed on the conversion.

The Mavericks scored what proved to be the winning touchdown in the second quarter when Jason Ballard picked up a fumble and returned it 8 yards. Burton's kick made it 14-6.

Narrows closed to 14-12 when Jeff Bowers hit Turner with a 20-yard touchdown pass before halftime, but the conversion try failed again.

Narrows moved the ball to James Monroe's 28-yard line midway through the fourth quarter, but Bowers barely overthrew Turner in the end zone on a fourth-down play and James Monroe ran out the clock.

Alleghany (N.C.) 28, Grayson County 0: The Blue Devils commited four turnovers and never could move the ball in their opener against the Trojans as they fell in a non-district game.

Solomon Dixon punished Grayson County, scoring 14 of Alleghany's points - six on a 55-yard interception return. Dixon also added a 4-yard touchdown scamper and a two-point conversion.

Patrick County 34, Carroll County 6: In Hillsville, Junior Penn racked up more than 200 yards rushing and Zach Kreager hauled in two touchdown passes to lead the Cougars past the Cavaliers in the opener for both teams.

Penn gained 220 yards on 25 carries, including touchdown runs of 35 and 82 yards. Kreager caught the only four Cougars completions, two of which were touchdowns. Ray Hilton also scored for Patrick County, on a 70-yard punt return.
