A station wagon going south veered into the northbound lane and struck a car head-on about 8:30 a.m., said Lorraine Smith, spokeswoman for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Police.
The driver of the station wagon, Sharik Curry, 24, of Paterson, N.J., was killed, as was the driver of the other car, Debbie L. Silverman, 36, of Melrose Park, Pa., Smith said.
The two passengers in the station wagon, Tony Coles, 29, and Troy Green, 29, both of Paterson, were in serious condition Saturday at Virginia Beach General Hospital, Smith said.
Of the three passengers in the other car - children ages 13, 14 and 15 - two were admitted to Virginia Beach General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Smith said. The other child was not injured, she said. Their names were not released.
Two of the children were Silverman's, and one was a neighbor's child, Smith said.
The bridge links Norfolk and Virginia Beach to Virginia's Eastern Shore. The accident occurred on a bridge section about two-thirds of the way to the Eastern Shore, Smith said.
The accident caused traffic backups in both directions. Tunnel police held traffic at the toll plazas until 11:48 a.m., Smith said.
