UVa students warned of sex attacker

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Police are warning University of Virginia students to be aware that a serial sex offender still may be in the area.

Six young women have been attacked since January in an area north of the school.

``I can tell you that we've made some progress, the investigation continues and we're very active,'' said John M. Wolford, Charlottesville police chief.

In each of the six attacks since Jan. 14, the attacker entered the woman's residence through an unlocked door between 5:30 and 7 a.m. Four times, the man fled after the women screamed and fought him off.

Law would deport illegal-alien inmates

RICHMOND - Del. George Grayson hopes to introduce legislation that would allow the state to release and deport prison inmates who are illegal aliens.

Such a move could save Virginia taxpayers $6.3 million to $7.2 million a year, said Grayson, a Williamsburg Democrat who is on a legislative commission studying the impact of illegal immigrants in Virginia.

Of Virginia's approximately 25,000 inmates, 350 to 400 are illegal immigrants, state figures show. At an annual cost of $18,000 per inmate, Virginia spends $6.3 million to $7.2 million a year to incarcerate illegal aliens.

In addition to saving taxpayers money, deporting the criminals would free up much-needed prison space, Grayson said.

Lawsuit blames CSX for woman's death

WILLIAMSBURG - The estate of a woman killed by a train while she was stopped at a traffic light is suing CSX Transportation Corp. for more than $2.5 million.

Rose M. Kjerstad-Galindo of Newport News died in 1993 when a train struck the back of her car, which was behind two other cars at an intersection. Police said she inched forward as the train approached and apparently thought she was out of the way.

The lawsuit, filed last week in Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court, alleges that the equipment that caused to crossing light to go on and the lights to flash also should have signaled the traffic light at the intersection to turn green.
