BAGLEY, Agatha Miller, 72, of Kenbridge, formerly of Roanoke, died Tuesday, August 29, 1995, at Community Memorial Hospital in Southill, Va. She is survived by one son, Preston Miller I of Roanoke; three sisters, Evelyn Smith, Marqnia Steptoe and Elaine Ward, all of Roanoke; one grandson, Preston Miller II of Roanoke; one granddaughter, Onawa Miller of Roanoke; four nieces; one nephew; many great-nieces and nephews; three devoted friends, Catherine Swain, Bessy Rhoades and Roberta Perdue. Services will be held at Sweet Union Baptist Church Monday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. E.T. Burton. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Burial will be at Mt. Airy Cemetery in Franklin County. Arrangements by Fizer Funeral Home.

BAKER, Claudine V., 82, of Salem, died Saturday, September 2, 1995, in Richfield Nursing Center. She was retired from Maid Bess Corporation, was a lifelong active member of Salem Church of Christ, and a member of Salem Senior Citizens Organization. She is survived by one sister, Mary B. Hancock, Goodview; three brothers, Howard L. Baker, Moneta, Earl S. Baker, Salem, Warren Baker, Roanoke; many nieces and nephews. She had requested her body be donated to science. The family suggests memorials be made to the Hazelridge Home for Adults, 5220 Hazelridge Rd., Roanoke, VA or Salem Church of Christ. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

BISHOP, Buddy L., 55, of Salem, passed away, Friday, September 1, 1995. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Salem. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Salem Rescue Squad or the Kingdom Hall Building Fund.

BOONE, Maggie Bowman, 97, of Route 1, Wirtz, died Saturday, September 2, 1995 at her residence. She was the widow of I. C. Boone. Surviving are seven daughters and six sons-in-law, Ena and John Miller, Ohio, Dorothy and Ezra Layman, Wirtz, Ruth and Raymond Garber, Ohio, Ruby Taylor, Wirtz, Susie and Ezra Bowman, Lydia and Albert Rutrough, Dora and Marion Austin all of Rocky Mount; seven sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Mary Boone, Ohio, Arthur and Rowena Boone, Vinton, Samuel and Eva Boone, Ohio, Ezra and Ginger Boone, California, Joe and Phyllis Boone, Ohio, Riley and Judy Boone, Leesburg, Roy and JoAnn Boone, Wirtz; 52 grandchildren; 106 great-grandchildren; 42 great-great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Rosemary Bowman, Ohio; a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Oak Hill Old German Baptist Church 11 a.m. Monday with the Home Brethren officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family asks that flowers be omitted. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Flora Funeral Service, 342 S. Main St., Rocky Mount.

BOOTH, Michael Alan, 36, of Salem, formerly of Atlanta, Ga., went to be with his Lord on September 1, 1995 after a long and valiant flight against the Aids virus. He is preceded in death by his father, Pryor M. Booth. He is survived by his mother, Peggy Matz Booth; a very special brother, Tommy Booth and another brother, Robert Booth both of Roanoke. He leaves behind his long time comp anion, Kurtis Mealy of Atlanta Ga.; a very special and perhaps his closest and dearest friend, Wayne Hill of Atlanta, Ga.; a very special cousin, Ricky Matz of Atlanta, Ga.; another special cousin, Tana and her husband, Donald Orange of Atlanta, Ga., another very speical friend, Michael Tuck of Atlanta, Ga.; also many other friends in Atlanta and a very special doctor, Dr. Stephen Kager of Atlanta, Ga. who had a hug for him every time he went to see him. Also all of his special aunts, uncles and cousins and also a lot of nice people from Roanoke Memorial Hospice. Last but not least, his beloved St. Bernard puppy, Dolly Marie. Alan was a very special person and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 5, 1995 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Salem, with Rev. John Smith and Rev. Gene Burris officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. BRICKEY, Helen Kemp, 74, of Salem, passed away Friday, September 1, 1995. Memorial mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 9, 1995 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Salem. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.

COOK, Mildred Hamblin Thornton, 82, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, September 2, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Aubrey C. Thornton, William E. Cook. Surviving are her sons, Gerald Thornton, Cheyenne, Wyo., Harry W. Hall, Roanoke; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Geraldine Kemple, Canton, Ohio, Dorothea Erwin, Baton Rouge, La. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Missions Fund at Shenandoah Baptist Church, 6520 Williamson Rd., Roanoke, VA 24019. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Tuesday at Oakey's North Chapel by the Rev. Albin P. Crutchfield. EVERSOLE, Buford Sterling Jr., 69, of Wytheville, died Friday, September 1, 1995 in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Mozelle M. Eversole of the home; three daughters, Karen Eversole Akers of Wytheville, Frances Eversole Jones of Wytheville, Ruthie Eversole Murray of Conway, S.C.; two sons, Michael McKinney Slaughter of Wytheville, Buford S. Eversole III of Louisiana; two sisters, Mary Eversole Henson of Salem, Betty Eversole Chocklett of Roanoke; two brothers, Luther Eversole of Richmond, Bobby Lee Eversole of Alexandria; six grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 5, 1995 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home with Mr. Billy Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery, Wytheville. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home. GARRETSON, Clara Leedy, 100, of Marion, died Saturday September 2, 1995, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was the widow of Guy G. Garretson Sr. and was preceded in death by three children, Genelle Garretson, Geraldine G. Hall and Guy G. Garretson Jr. She is survived by one daughter, Mildred G. Condon of Marion; one son, Eldridge R. Garretson of Stokesdale, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Kay Hall DeVault, Gerald L. Hall, Mittie G. McDonald, Dr. William K. Garretson, Virginia G. Powell, Jayne G. Holland, Ellen G. Meek, Scot R. Garretson, and Alexis G. Hodges.; twelve great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; one niece, Jill Borcherding. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 6, 1995, at 11 a.m. at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church with Pastor James H. Bangle offic iating. Burial will follow in Round Hill Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Ebenezer Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 151, Marion, Va. 24354. HAINES, Fern Price, 86, of Millburn, N.J., passed away Thursday, August 31, 1995, in a New Jersey nursing home. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Marilyn Haines, Hackettstown, N.J.; a grandson, Dale Philip Haines, Alexandria; two sisters, Jewel Arrington, Troutville, Jeanette Crawford, Roanoke. Mrs. Haines was a volunteer at the Millburn/Short Hills Chapter of the American Red Cross for 45 years. Burial will be in Millburn, N.J.

HURST, Andrew Jackson Sr., 84, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Thursday, August 31, 1995, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was born April 21, 1911, in Pulaski Co., to John Samuel and Vergie Lee Shinault Hurst Sr. Mr. Hurst was retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant after 11 years of service. He was a resident of Winston-Salem for five years, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Louise Epperly Hurst of the home; two sons, Andrew J. Hurst Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Wayne C. Hurst of Lewisville, N.C.; one daughter, Frances Hurst Cecil of King, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Ashley, Laura, Jamie, Sterling, Amber, Brittany, and Bethany; one sister, Leta Moore of Salem; two brothers, James Hurst of Dublin, and Richard Hurst of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Funeral services will be Sunday, September 3, at 2 p.m. at Konnoak Baptist Church with Dr. Ray Hamilton officiating. A 6 p.m. graveside service will follow in Old Dublin Cemetery, Dublin. NICHOLAS, Mrs. Cordelia Heighter, 76, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Lexington, died Friday, September 1, 1995, in a Roanoke hospital. A daughter of the late Monroe and Betty Harris Heighter, she was born May 1, 1919 in Clifton Forge and was a graduate of the former Jefferson High School. She was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church in Clifton Forge. Surviving are her husband, George W. Nicholas; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael (Linda) Nicholas; five grandchildren, Tamika, Na'Shon, Nikki, Kim, and Edward, all of Columbus Ohio; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Phillip Heig hter, Clifton Forge, and Gregory Heighter, Columbus, Ohio; three sisters-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Friends may call at the residence of Mrs. Sarah N. Colbert, 108 Tucker Street, Lexington, at any time and at the Lewis Funeral Home, Lexington, on Monday evening from 7 until 8. The body will be moved to the Main Street Baptist Church, Clifton Forge, on Tuesday on hour prior to service time. The family members are requested to assemble in the lower sanctuary of the church at 10:15. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1995, 11 a.m. at the Main Street Baptist Church, Clifton Forge, with the Rev. Matthew T. Barnette, Minister. SCHOOLS, Marie Preston, 75, of 1101 Peaks Street, Bedford, died Friday, September 1, 1995 at her home. She was born January 24, 1920 in the Huddleston community of Bedford County, a daughter of the late William Thomas Preston and Fleeta Mae Ashwell Preston. She was a member of Bedford Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her brothers, Osborne Preston and Warren B. Preston and her sister, Rubye Preston Curtis. She is survived by her husband, James A. Schools; her daughter, Marcella Kate Arline of Hershey, Pa.; two sisters, Lois Preston Silvey and Willie Mae Gates of Blacksburg; two grandchildren, James Matthew Davidson and Ashley Elizabeth Davidson. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, September 4, 1995 at 10 a.m. at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Stuart A. Kersey officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. SHANK, John Leonard, 97, of Salem, died Friday, September 1, 1995. Mr. Shank was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Jeter Shank, his brother, James Edward Shank, and his parents, John Emory and Tamsey Garst Shank. He is survived by his daughter, Thelma Shank Hildebrand; his son, John Maurice Shank; son in law, John R. Hildebrand; four grandchildren, Martha Hildebrand Sherwood and spouse, Robert W. Sherwood, Sarah Hildebrand Caldwell and spouse, C. Gregory Caldwell, John R. Hildebrand Jr., Caroline Hildebrand Cochrane and spouse, James H. Cochrane; six great-granddaughters, Catherine and Margaret Sherwood, Elizabeth and Mary Claire Hildebrand and Caroline and Catherine Caldwell; a nephew, Charles Byrd Shank; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Gravely Shank. Mr. Shank was a lifelong faithful member of Salem Presbyterian Church. He served the Salem Church in many capacities: Church School Superintendent, Chairman of the Ushers Guild and the Deaconate, and member of the Session. He was Elected Elder Emeritus in 1980. Mr. Shank was also active in Salem civic affairs and in the business community. He served on City Council for 24 years, being first elected in 1948. He served as Vice Mayor for 20 of these years and a Mayor from 1964 to 1968. Mr. Shank was President of Salem Foundry and Machine Works and Salem Elevator Company until his retirement. Thereafter he was a manufacturers representative for Hankle-Harris Furniture Company. Mr. Shank was a member of the Class of 1921 at Virginia Tech, a veteran of World War I, a Mason, a former Shriner, and a former member of the Salem Rotary Club. A funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Dean Lindsey at noon, Tuesday, September 5, 1995, at Salem Presbyterian Church with burial in East Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Hildebrand home and suggests memorials to the Salem Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.

SHEPHERD, Barbara Collins, (``Barby""), went to be with the Lord Saturday, September 2, 1995. She was a committed Christian who loved the Lord with all her heart. She was a member of Bonsack Baptist Church and was employed by the Blue Ridge Regional Business Journal. Surviving are her husband, Robert (``Bob"") Padgett Shepherd; son, Kevin Michael Reeves, Richmond; step daughters, Connie Shepherd Williams and Toni Rae Shepherd Downs both of Cartersville, Ga.; mother, Thelma M. Caruthers, Prince George; precious sister and brother-in-law, Karen Sue (``Susie"") and Ted Saunders, Hopewell; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard M. and Elsie Collins, Louisa, Michael Earl and Linda Tanner, Amelia; two grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bonsack Baptist Church by Dr. Robert G. Moore III and the Rev. Charles R. Ward. Interment will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. SIMMONS, Virginia, 89, of R.F.D. 1 Fincastle, died Saturday morning, September 2, 1995. She was the widow of Carl C. Simmons and is survived by a daughter, Ruth S. Hurst of Roanoke; a daughter-in-law, Ernesta S. Simmons of Roanoke; grandchildren, Robert Hurst, Diane Naff and Lawrence Simmons. SMITH, Ruby T., 54, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, September 2, 1995. She was a former employee of Maid Bess Corp. and a member of New Testament Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Samuel W. Smith; daughter, Jackie S. Jordan and husband Otha of Vinton; son, Tony Smith and wife Angela of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Chassidy Jordan, Ashleigh Jordan, Cody Smith, Taylor Smith; mother, Myrtle Weeks of Roanoke; brothers, Grover Thomas of Salem, Clide Thomas Jr. of Floyd; sisters, Nettie Janney, Lois Considder, Mary Smith all of Roanoke.
