Chief Warrant Officer 4 James P. Lester retired from the U.S. Navy on July 28, 1995, after serving 30 years on various ships and shore duty assignments. Approximately 100 friends and family attended the ceremony on board U.S.S. L.Y. Spear in Norfolk. A reception followed at the Breezy Point Officers Club at the Naval Air Station.
Mr. Lester was born in Roanoke, Virginia and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1965. He went to boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois and MR ``A'' School in San Diego before reporting to his first ship in Norfolk, the U.S.S. Vulcan (AR 5). Lester also served on the U.S.S. L.Y. Spear (AS 36), the U.S.S. Simon Lake (AS 33), the U.S.S. Hunley (AS 31), the U.S.S. Frank Cable (AS 40), and was Docking Officer on the Drydock Resolute (AFDM 10). He was also stationed in Charleston, South Carolina and Kings Bay, Georgia. He also served in the Persian Gulf.
During his career, Warrant Officer Lester received many awards including four Navy Achievement Medals and two Navy Commendation Medals.
While serving in the Navy, he received his Bachelor's Degree from South Illionois University in Education and his Master's Degree from Central Michigan University in Personnel Management.
Mr. Lester resides in Chesapeake, Virginia with his wife Shirley, and son Nicholas. His mother, Gertrude Lester, and brother, Mike, still reside in the Roanoke area.
