Brice, who punts left-footed, kicked off right-footed to William and Mary's 7-yard line in the first quarter.
It appeared Brice would not attempt a punt until UVa was stopped just short of a first down in the third quarter. Brice reached for a high snap and got off a 45-yarder with 12:30 left in the period.
FICKLE FOOT
Rafael Garcia, who shared kickoff duties with Brice, had kicked two field goals of more than 40 yards in his college career before hitting a 42-yarder on the next-to-last play of the first half.
It was not readily apparent what Virginia's kickoff strategy was. Brice kicked off twice, but Garcia attempted the next kickoff on both occasions. A pulled muscle had prevented Brice from practicing kickoffs in the preseason.
ALWAYS A THRILL
Virginia's second touchdown Saturday night resulted from a blocked punt, but the Tribe took advantage of UVa's 10-man rush for a 25-yard pass from punter Steve Fill to Darren Sharper.
William and Mary had faked a punt before a 29-yard pass from Fill to Ron Harrison was nullified by an illegal-procedure call.
UVa was rewarded for its daring when James Farrior broke through the protection and blocked Fill's attempt with 5:36 remaining in the first quarter. Freshman running back Terrence Wilkins recovered in the end zone for the first touchdown of his career.
TAKING IT EASY
Tiki Barber, who suffered a bruised shoulder in UVa's 18-17 loss to Michigan, was in uniform but did not start against William and Mary.
The former Cave Spring High School standout entered the game on the Cavaliers' second series and gained 15 yards on his first carry, but all but two of his 17 carries came in the last three quarters.
INJURY REPORT
Junior center Dave Gathman, the only first-year starter on Virginia's offensive line, was helped off the field after suffering an apparent knee or ankle injury with 14:18 remaining. Gathman was replaced by classmate Tom Locklin, the top backup at several line positions.
DEREY STARTS
UVa tight end Bobby Neely, coming off a career-best six-reception performance against Michigan on Aug.26, suffered a sprained ankle in practice during the week and was not in uniform.
Walt Derey, a junior from Northside High School, made his second start in Neely's place. Derey's only previous start was last year against Clemson.
NEXT OPPONENT
The Cavaliers (1-1) will visit North Carolina State (1-0) at 4 p.m. at Carter-Finley Stadium. The Wolfpack was a 33-16 winner in its opener Thursday against Marshall. Virginia had beaten N.C. State six straight times before losing three in a row, the past two after blowing double-digit leads.
