HOKIES EARN TIE IN SOCCER VS. UMASS

Virginia Tech and Massachusetts battled to a 1-1 overtime tie in men's soccer Sunday as the Hokies made their debut in Atlantic 10 competition at Massachusetts.

After UMass' Dave Siljanovski scored in the first overtime period, Stanislav Licul of Virginia Tech (0-1-1) forced the tie, scoring a goal with 1:05 left in the second overtime.

Massachusetts (1-0-1) outshot the Hokies 13-12.

In other sports in the region:

Preseason All-Americans Damian Silvera and Mike Fisher sparked the offense as four-time defending NCAA champion Virginia opened its men's soccer season with a 3-0 victory over Nevada-Las Vegas at the Coca-Cola Classic in Charlottesville.

Silvera scored in the first half, and Fisher set up goals by Tim Prisco and Matt Leonard to seal the victory for the Cavaliers, who meet Boston College today. The Eagles dropped a 3-1 decision Sunday to American, which will face UNLV today.

Bobby Radford of Ferrum won the G.R. Chevrolet-B99 50-lap Late Model Stock car race at Franklin County Speedway on Saturday night, his 10th victory of the season.

Butch Isom, the only competition for Radford's Chrysler, was knocked out of contention during the first lap. Jimmy Mullins challenged Radford until his tires wore out. Mullins finished second. Orvil Reedy, who had started on the outside of the front row, was third. Lowe Smith finished fourth and Steve Lynch fifth.

Mike Dudley won the Street Stock feature. Mike Elkins was second, followed by Leon Dalton, David Stout and Freddie Goff.

Carlton Clark took the Mini Stock division. Chris Martin was second, James Cox finished third, Stacy LaPrade was fourth and Jeff Hodges took fifth.

In the Pure Stock race, Kelly Kingery picked up his fifth victory and a $1,000 bounty. Jay Peery was second, followed by Tommy Dooley, Kevin Ransome and Danny Wickham.

Rickey Ferguson won the Rookies race. Mark Stoner was second, Scott Foley third, Bob Craggar fourth and David Duncan fifth.

Tracy Scott finished first in the Any Car event.

Six players scored as Maryland defeated the Virginia Tech women's soccer team 6-0.

Maryland, ranked 15th in the nation by Soccer News, scored three goals each in the first and second halves. The Terrapins outshot the Hokies 37-2. Virginia Tech goalkeeper Hope Handley finished with 23 saves.

The Roanoke Star Under-15 White boys' team defeated the Stafford Snipers 3-2 behind leading scorer Nathan Thomas to win the Midlothian Labor Day Cup soccer tournament championship in Richmond.

The U-13 White team took second in its division, losing to Carolina United 1-0 after upsetting the state champion, the Midlothian Blast, 4-1 in a semifinal. The U-14 Red squad also was a runner-up, falling in the final of the Atlantic Labor Day Classic in Virginia Beach.
