Septemberfest in Radford

RADFORD - The seventh annual Septemberfest is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 8, and Saturday, Sept. 9.

The event is organized by Main Street Radford and features entertainment, vendors, food and fashion.

Septemberfest will kick off Friday with a fashion show at 5 p.m. at Sew Biz. At 6 p.m., there will be wine tasting by Chateau Morrisette and entertainment by a jazz ensemble in the courtyard of Central Depot at First and Harvey streets.

Music, entertainment and food will be featured starting at 10 a.m. Saturday on Norwood Street. The group Blackwater will perform at 7 p.m.

Pops concert in Blacksburg

BLACKSBURG - An evening at the pops - Boston style, no less.

The New River Valley Pops Orchestra will perform a cabaret of light classics Saturday, Sept. 9 at Squires Student Center, Virginia Tech.

The orchestra is conducted by Jim Glazebrook and features soloist Jeanne Schumann.

During the program, Blacksburg restaurants will serve their specialties and desserts.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner service will begin at 6 p.m. the concert will start at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the Virginia Tech Arts Office; Radford University Music Office; Mainstream Morrell Music, Radford and Blacksburg locations; Ridenhour Music Center in Christiansburg; Radford University Bookstore, Dalton Hall; Volume Two Bookstore, Blacksburg; or at the door.

The program is presented by the New River Valley Friends of the Roanoke Symphony and First National Bank. Proceeds benefit the music education programs of the New River Valley Friends.

Grant application deadline Oct. 2

RICHMOND - Application deadline for the Virginia Commission for the Arts' 1995-96 Performing Arts Endowment Matching Program is Oct. 2 at 5 p.m. All applications and required attachments must be received by this date.

The Performing Arts Endowment Matching Program provides funding to partially match the interest earned by performing arts organizations on their endowment funds. Funds provide the organizations with financial stability and enable them to grow in artistic quality and service to the community.

To be eligible, organizations must be incorporated in Virginia and exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, whose primary purpose is the production of music, opera, theater or dance. Organizations must also pay its performers professional-level salaries and fees.

Rotary spelling bee Sept. 22

CHRISTIANSBURG - How well do you spell?

The Montgomery County Rotary Club sponsors its 3rd annual New River Valley spelling bee Friday, Sept. 22, at Custom Catering on Patrick Henry Drive in Blacksburg.

Local businesses, educational departments and organizations can sponsor teams of three employees or members. Entry fee is $200 per team and includes lunch and prizes.

Proceeds from the spelling bee will support local literacy initiatives in the New River Valley and other local projects and programs of the Montgomery County Rotary. Last year, the club raised and donated $1,800 from the spelling bee to the local affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of America.

Dog obedience classes planned

BLACKSBURG - Beginning and advanced dog obedience classes will be offered for 10 weeks starting Saturday, Sept. 9.

Classes are offered by the Blacksburg Parks and Recreation Dept. and will be taught by Judy Pierson. Cost is $15 plus a $2 parking fee.

Classes will be at the Blacksburg Town Park on Giles and Turner Streets. Beginner class meets for 10 consecutive Saturdays 9:30-10:30 a.m. Advanced classes meet at the same location 11 a.m.-noon. Owners of beginner dogs are asked not to bring their dogs to the first class.

Classes are designed for all types of dogs, registered or not, six months or older. The beginner course includes on-leash heeling, sits, sit-stay, down-stay, recall, finish to heel and stand-stay. Special problems with individual dogs will also be worked on.
