ALLAWAY, Mildred Holland, 79, of Lexington, died Saturday, September 2, 1995. Funeral 1:30 p.m. Sunday, September 10, 1995 at First Presbyterian Church, Lincoln, Nebraska. Arrangements by Harrison Funeral Home.

BAKER, Claudine V., 82, of Salem, died Saturday, September 2, 1995, in Richfield Nursing Center. She was retired from Maid Bess Corporation, was a lifelong active member of Salem Church of Christ, and a member of Salem Senior Citizens Organization. She is survived by one sister, Mary B. Hancock, Goodview; three brothers, Howard L. Baker, Moneta, Earl S. Baker, Salem, Warren Baker, Roanoke; many nieces and nephews. She had requested her body be donated to science. The family suggests memorials be made to the Hazelridge Home for Adults, 5220 Hazelridge Rd., Roanoke, VA or Salem Church of Christ. A memorial service will be held at Salem Church of Christ, 401 Main St., 4 p.m. Thursday, September 7, 1995.

BENEDICT, Ullman Hamilton, 74, of Lexington, died Sunday, September 3, 1995 at his home. Mr. Benedict was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on March 4,1921, a son of the late Park H. Benedict and Kathryn Haynes Benedict. He was a member of the R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church, Lexington, and retired as the Virginia Distribution Manager of Cut Order and Sample Department for Burlington Industries. Surviving are his wife, Rose Anna Benedict, Lexington; daughter, Rosemarie Benedict, Harrisburg, Penn.; son, William Joseph Benedict, Avon Lake, Ohio; three brothers, Park Benedict, Albert Benedict, James Benedict; three sisters, Kathryn Johnson, Clare Jackson and Mary Lange, all of Philadelphia, Penn.; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, September 6, 1995, at 10:30 a.m. from the R. E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church, with the Rev. R. David Cox officiating. BYRD, Henry Clay, 78, of Roanoke, died Sunday, September 3, 1995 in a local hospital. He was a retired employee of E. C. Pace & Company and was a member of Connelly Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by a grandson, Edmund C. Byrd Jr. Surviving are his wife, Louisa H. Byrd; sons and daughters-in-law, Edmund C. and Brenda L. Byrd, Roanoke, Richard W. Byrd and fiancee, Loretta Francis, Hardy; daughters and sons-in-law, Louise B. and David L. Huffman, Ocala, Fla., Barbara B. Price and fiance, Robert Wood, Hardy; grandchildren, David L. Jr. and Craig Huffman, Jennifer Byrd; great-grandson, Jacob Edmund Muce; sisters, Sallie Willie Jones, Franklin Co., Carrie Arthur, Vinton. DAVIS, Bonnie Marie Simmons, of Salem, passed away Sunday, September 3, 1995, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. She is preceded in death by her parents, Marie Porter Holland and Ted J. Simmons. Survivors include her husband, Robert E. Davis III; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. IV and Kimberly Davis; grandchildren, Robert E. Davis V, Joseph T. Davis, Victoria S. Lee; a sister, Susan H. Bilby; brothers, Ted J. Simmons Jr., Richard G. Simmons, David Simmons, Douglas L. Holland and Donald B. Holland; many aunts and uncles. DOSS, Effie Louise Burnette, 90, passed on to her heavenly home Sunday, September 3, 1995. She was born to Clara Mae Sheppard Burnette and Jefferson Barney Burnette in Pulaski County on January 27, 1905. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Eugene Doss Sr.; two brothers, Johnny and Harvey Burnette; a sister, Essie Leffel. Mrs. Doss retired from K & W Cafeteria at Crossroads Mall. Her face was familiar to those who frequented the following restaurants and lunch counters, Woodrum Airport, Sambo's, 16 West, S & W, Arlans, Allan's Pharmacy, Medical Center Pharmacy and Truckstops of America. She was a member of Glade Creek Baptist Church, Blue Ridge, and a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. Surviving are her daughters and son-in-law, Martha R. and Wilson A. St.Clair, Betty D. Robbins, all of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Elmer E. Jr. and Ann H. Doss, Florida; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Corinne Burnette, Roanoke; sisters, Gladys Harper, Vinton, Ruby Obenchain, Dorothy Burnette, both of Roanoke; 6 grandchildren; and a very special granddaughter, Denise Cuddy; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews. EDWARDS, Evelyn W., 79, of Christiansburg, died Sunday morning, September 3, 1995 at her home. She was a retired elementary school teacher. ELMORE, Gregory Wade, 23, of New Castle, died Sunday, September 3, 1995. He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Leonard Clifton Elmore. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Mr. And Mrs. Gene (Wanda) Cantrell; his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Jean) Elmore; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Steve (April) Medley, Dawn and Mike Strickland. JOHNSON, Charles Henry, 69, of White Gate, died Monday, September 4, 1995, at his home. He was born February 15, 1926 at White Gate, the son of the late John Francis and Nellie Lois Sadler Johnson. He was a life-long resident of Giles County, was a former Giles Deputy Sheriff, a former Rich Creek Town Policeman, was retired from the Virginia Lime Company, Goldbond, and was veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emily Collins Johnson; three sons, Charles Michael Johnson and Eugene Francis Johnson, both of White Gate, John Jeffrey Johnson, Pearisburg; three daughters, Mrs. Judy J. Powell, Narrows, Mrs. Donna J. Sarver, Pembroke, Mrs. Tammy J. Riggs, Pearisburg; one brother, Richard Johnson, Poplar Hill; one sister, Mrs. Molly Perdue, Dublin; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the A. LESTER, Curtis Victor, 56, of Floyd, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 3, 1995. He was the owner of Lester's Garage in Riner. McCADDEN, Lyndon Carrington Jr., (``Butch""), 46, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, September 4, 1995. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was employed at Harris Teeter. POLLARD, Elise Underwood, 90, of Vinton, passed away Saturday, September 2, 1995. She was the widow of the late J. Henry Pollard. Mrs. Pollard was born in Montvale, March 23, 1905 and was the daughter of the late Samuel and Cora Belle Underwood of Montvale. She had been a patient at the Carriage Hill Retirement Center for the past three years. Elise was a graduate of Montvale High School and National Business College. She retired from Gill Memorial Hospital as a medical records librarian. She lived in Vinton for many years and was very active in the community, especially Thrasher Memorial Methodist Church where she had been a member since 1934. She was a member of the choir and her late husband was Treasurer of the church for many years. Mrs. Pollard was Worthy Matron of Electra Eastern Star Chapter #33 of Roanoke during 1945-1946. She was the first Worth Matron of the Vinton Eastern Star Chapter #1367. When the chapter was first organized in 1950. Survivors include a sister and brother-ion-law, Vinnie Cosby and James Cosby of Towson, Md.; also several nieces and nephews; and the devoted Lucy Preston Circle #2 of Thrasher Church; and a host of wonderful friends and in-laws who were so loyal to her during her long illness. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 5, 1995, from the Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wm. Anthony Layman and Dr. George W. Jones officiating. ROGERS, Grace Ross, 86, of Marion, died Monday, September 4, 1995 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was the widow of J. S. ""Shorty"" Rogers. Mrs. Rogers attended Oak Hill Academy, Radford University, and was a teacher in the Smyth County School System for many years having taught at Riverside School and Walker's Creek and the Sherrill Memorial Sunday School Class. Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Peggy and William B. King Sr., Advance, N.C., Jean Perkins, Winston-Salem, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Debbie Rogers, Marion, Va.; one sister, Winnie Slemp, Chilhowie, Va.; eight grandchildren, David Mark Perkins, Perry Michael Perkins, William Bryan King Jr., Kevin Patrick King, She rree D. SAGE, Lois Marshall, 70, of Radford, passed away Sunday, September 3, 1995 at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a retired beautician. Survivors include her husband, Harold Sage, Radford; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Sonny Dodson, Orange, Judith and Dennis McCoy, Greenville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Tyler Andrew Dodson, Laura Elizabeth McCoy and Jason Bradley McCoy; two brothers, Clifford Marshall, Arlington and Wilmer S. Marshall, Galax; four sisters, Mrs. Nelle Spinks, Galax, Mrs. Lema Wood, Fries and Mrs. Ernestine Gunter and Mrs. Mary Finger, both of Lincolnton, N.C. SHANK, John Leonard, 97, of Salem, died Friday, September 1, 1995. Mr. Shank was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Jeter Shank, his brother, James Edward Shank, and his parents, John Emory and Tamsey Garst Shank. He is survived by his daughter, Thelma Shank Hildebrand; his son, John Maurice Shank; son in law, John R. Hildebrand; four grandchildren, Martha Hildebrand Sherwood and spouse, Robert W. Sherwood, Sarah Hildebrand Caldwell and spouse, C. Gregory Caldwell, John R. Hildebrand Jr., Caroline Hildebrand Cochrane and spouse, James H. Cochrane; six great-granddaughters, Catherine and Margaret Sherwood, Elizabeth and Mary Claire Hildebrand and Caroline and Catherine Caldwell; a nephew, Charles Byrd Shank; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Gravely Shank. Mr. Shank was a lifelong faithful member of Salem Presbyterian Church. He served the Salem Church in many capacities: Church School Superintendent, Chairman of the Ushers Guild and the Diaconate, and member of the Session. He was Elected Elder Emeritus in 1980. Mr. Shank was also active in Salem civic affairs and in the business community. He served on City Council for 24 years, being first elected in 1948. He served as Vice Mayor for 20 of these years and a Mayor from 1964 to 1968. Mr. Shank was President of Salem Foundry and Machine Works and Salem Elevator Company until his retirement. Thereafter he was a manufacturers representative for Henkle-Harris Furniture Company. Mr. Shank was a member of the Class of 1921 at Virginia Tech, a veteran of World War I, a Mason, a former Shriner, and a former member of the Salem Rotary Club. A funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Dean Lindsey at noon, Tuesday, September 5, 1995, at Salem Presbyterian Church with burial in East Hill Cemetery. SMITH, Mary Eyler, 79, of Riner, formerly of Lynchburg, died Sunday, September 3, 1995 in Radford Community Hospital. She was the wife of the late William Garland Smith. Born in Garvin, Minn. July 21, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Levi and Anna Moran Eyler. Mrs. Smith was retired from Park Avenue Dry Cleaners in Lynchburg and was a member of Auburn United Methodist Church in Riner, where she served as President of the United Methodist Women. She was also a proud member of the Christiansburg Senior Citizens Walk-A-Roos. She is survived by five sons and four daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Peggy Smith, Ruckersville, William Levi and Muriel Smith, Oakland, Calif., J. Pat and Kathy Smith, Riner, Robert L. and Faye Smith, Lynchburg and Mark A. Smith, Winchester; one daughter and son-in-law, Carole Johanna (Jo) and Link White, Lynchburg; one brother, James F. SOUTHGATE, Rev. Dr. Herbert S., 94 of Wagon Trail, Black Mountain N.C., died Saturday, September 2, 1995 at the Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Epworth United Methodist Church in Norfolk, Va.

SUTHERLAND, Charles R., (``Chuck""), 31, of Richmond, departed this life Monday, September 4, 1995. He is survived by his loving parents, Joyce and Chris Ellis; one sister and brother-in-law, Teresa and Bobby Watlington; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ricky and Susan Sutherland and Barry and Jene Sutherland; two nieces; and three nephews; his dedicated friend, David Cook; and a host of other friends. Chuck was formerly the manager of the Proof Operations Department of the Virginia Federal Bank in Richmond. His remains rest at the Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment in Westhampton Memorial Park.
