CHRISTIANSBURG - Following is a list of times and locations for voter registration sites starting today. Voter registration will continue through Oct. 7. The last day to register and to make address changes in order to be eligible for the November election is Tuesday, Oct. 10. The last day for receiving applications for mail ballots is Thursday, Nov. 2. Saturday, Nov. 4 is the last day for in-person absentee voting.

Language institute classes announced
BLACKSBURG - Fall classes at the Blacksburg Language Institute for Children starts Sept. 18. Six-week sessions in German, Spanish and French will be offered. For registration materials and information, call Jeannie Owens Straw at 552-7336.
Giles cable service extended
PEMBROKE - Giles-Craig Communications Inc. has expanded service in portions of Giles and Craig counties.
Residents in Newport, Eggleston, Maybrook and Huffman now have cable access.
Installation has been free, but the monthly fee for Super Basic 28 channels is $24.95. Premium channels such as HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and The Disney Channel are extra. Residents of Pearisburg, Pembroke, Narrows, and Rich Creek already receive cable television.
Radford CROP walk is Oct. 15
RADFORD - The city's annual CROP walk is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. at Radford University's Dedmon Center.
The walk will be one of many nationwide in which participants will raise money to fight world hunger through the efforts of the Church World Service. The local event is sponsored by the Radford-Fairlawn Ministerial Association.
Twenty-five percent of the money raised in Radford will be used for local needs, including the Women's Resource Center, Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread and the Radford Food Pantry.

`Baby Shower' benefit planned
BLACKSBURG - Charter Federal Savings Bank and Long & Long P.C., with the United Way, are sponsoring a "Baby Shower" to benefit the Children's Home Society.
New clothing for babies - newborns to six months - will be collected Sept. 11 to Sept. 15 at the bank on Roanoke Street in Blacksburg.

Storage tank repairs planned
BLACKSBURG - Starting Wednesday, Sept. 6, repair work will begin on the Alleghany Water storage tank on Clay Street. The work will include sandblasting and painting of the interior and exterior of the tank. The work should be completed by the third week in November.
Sandblasting and painting operations require the tank to be enclosed so that no cleaning/blasting debris or paint overspray be allowed to escape into the atmosphere.
Once completed, the Town of Blacksburg's water storage capabilities will be increased, adding to water storage capacity during emergency situations.

September is National Library Card Sign Up Month. As an incentive, the Headquarters Branch in Christiansburg and the Blacksburg Area Branch libraries will have a drawing at the end of the month from the names of all the people who signed up for a new library card during September.
Winner at the Headquarters Branch will receive a $50 savings bond, courtesy of First National Bank of Christiansburg; winner at the Blacksburg Branch will receive a book bag and coffee mug.
The staff at Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library encourage all residents to obtain a library card from their local branch or bookmobile. Cards and library services are free.
