TECH, UVA START JOINT BUILDING

The presidents of Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia broke ground Tuesday for the schools' first permanent home in Northern Virginia.

The universities expect to occupy the building in Falls Church in December 1996.

Virginia Tech has offered classes and programs in the area for 80 years and began offering graduate degrees from a rented farmhouse in Reston in 1969.

UVa started offering courses in Northern Virginia more than 40 years ago.

The two universities began sharing the Telstar building in Falls Church in 1981, but have outgrown it.

The new four-story, 105,000-square-foot structure is designed for classrooms rather than offices, and wired with fiber-optic cable.

Most classrooms also will have satellite downlink capability.
