FIRE BLAMED ON CHILD WITH LIGHTER

A fire apparently set by a child playing with a lighter damaged a two-story house in Southeast Roanoke on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to 704 Bullitt Ave. about 1:48 p.m. and controlled the fire within about 10 minutes, according to Fire Capt. Jerry Hogan. No one was injured.

A child playing with a lighter in an upstairs bedroom apparently set some papers on fire, Hogan said. The child then ran outside to his mother. By the time she looked, smoke already was billowing from the second floor, he said.

Hogan estimated that the house received about $15,000 in damage. The family was relocated by the Red Cross.
