ROANOKE MAN DROWNS IN SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE

The body of a 38-year-old Roanoke man who drowned in Smith Mountain Lake was found near the Bridgewater Plaza early Tuesday.

Kim Edward Turner was last seen about 10 p.m. Sunday on a boat docked at the restaurant and shopping complex in Franklin County, according to Lt. Karl Martin of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Turner had remained on the boat while two of his friends went to Bridgewater Plaza. When the friends returned about 11 p.m., Turner was gone, Martin said. The friends filed a missing-person report Monday with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.

As divers from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office suited up Tuesday morning, Turner's body was found in the waters around the shopping center. According to an autopsy report, Turner drowned.

Martin said it is unclear if alcohol played a role in Turner's death.
