CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Domestic coal production totaled 20.3 million tons during the week ending Aug. 26, up 2 percent from the 19.9 million tons produced the previous week, the U.S. Department of Energy reported Tuesday.
The U.S. coal industry produced 21.1 million tons in the same week last year, according to the department's Energy Information Administration.
Virginia mines produced 735,000 tons during the survey week, down from 780,000 tons a week earlier and 789,000 tons in the corresponding week a year ago.
Domestic coal production so far this year is 656 million tons, less than 1 percent ahead of last year's production at this time.
The week's production accounts for bituminous and lignite coal.|

Contractor to sell power-line gear
Richardson-Wayland Electrical Corp., a Roanoke electrical contractor, is getting out of the power-line construction business and selling all of its power-line equipment at a Sept. 20 auction at the Roanoke Industrial Center.
Everything in the sale belongs to Richardson-Wayland and will be sold to the highest bidder, regardless of the price, according to Steve Kriebel, vice president of a Pennsylvania auction company handling the sale. Among the items to be sold are trucks, cranes, all-terrain vehicles and trailers.
The auction begins at 9 a.m. Items for sale may be viewed during the week before the auction and at 7 a.m. on the day of the sale.
