ROANOKE TEAM WINS TOURNAMENT

Two teams, including a team from Roanoke, won championships during the sectional qualifier of the Oldsmobile Scramble golf tournament conducted by the Middle Atlantic PGA and played at Hunting Hills on Tuesday.

The 5-man team from Roanoke Country Club included Mark Fry, Danny Camper, Buck Cullop, Mike Mauck and Ed Staley. The team tied for the championship in both gross score (17-under-par) and net score (18-under-par) with a team from Green Hills Golf Club composed of Mike Moyers, Clyde Taylor, Archie Taylor, Andy Bell and P.E. Gianniny.

The teams advance to the national tournament at Disney World on Sept. 28. The Roanoke team will play in a division of net score sectional winners, while the Green Hills team will be in the division of gross score winners.

Chris Chladek and Matt Whalen scored goals as Virginia Tech's men's soccer team beat St. Bonaventure 2-1 in the first Atlantic 10 event ever held in Blacksburg.

After a scoreless first half, Tech (1-1-1, 1-0-1) got on the board when Chladek scored off an assist from Whalen, who later scored on a direct kick. Tech held St. Bonaventure (1-2, 0-1) to eight shots.

Roanoke College scored two goals in the final 7:31 to beat Guilford 2-0 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer match at Greensboro. Lisa Franzio won a scramble for a loose ball in front of the net to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead at the 82:29 mark and Lori Clark scored four minutes later. Roanoke allowed just three shots on goal.
