The Lord Botetourt-Blacksburg girl's basketball game turned into the Sara(h) show.
Sarah Hicks and Sara Moore combined to score 60 points to lead the Cavaliers to a 75-59 non-district victory over the Indians in Blacksburg.
With Lord Botetourt (4-0) up by just three at halftime, the duo took over. Hicks, who scored 29, scored the first four points of the third quarter and set the tone for the rest of the game. In the decisive third stanza, Hicks scored eight points, six of which came on layups.
The Cavaliers outscored Blacksburg (1-3) 21-6 in the third quarter, with the majority of its points coming on the fastbreak. The Indians, who were 0-12 from the field in the quarter, hoisted several errant 3-point attempts that resulted in long rebounds. After grabbing a rebound beyond the free-throw line, Lord Botetourt was off to the races with Moore leading the charge.
If there were any questions about the outcome of the game going into the fourth quarter, Hicks and Moore quickly removed them. After April Rogers scored Blacksburg's first basket of the half with 7:17 remaining, the two scored 13 of the game's next 16 points. Moore's two free throws with 4:21 remaining closed the run, and gave Lord Botetourt its biggest lead at 71-39.
``When we get them [Moore and Hicks] clicking, things are going to happen." Cavaliers coach David Wheat said. ``We will not function with only one of them doing it. We need everybody contributing and we got that in the second half.''
``They played well, and we couldn't stop them,'' Blacksburg coach Mickey McGuigan said of Moore and Hicks. ``But I don't feel like we played them very well.''
For the game, Moore scored 21 points, 17 of which came from the free-throw line, but her contributions from the point guard position were equally as great.
The Cavaliers opened up a 34-31 halftime lead, on the strength of a 13-6 run in the final five minutes. Katrina Elliott, who scored 12 points, spurred the run with six points.
She helped spark the Lord Botetourt fastbreak, scoring on two layups and pressuring the ball. In the final 3:34 of the first half, the Cavaliers forced six Blacksburg turnovers.
The second quarter was the exact opposite of the first. Blacksburg forced turnovers and created easy baskets. The Indians opened up a 21-17 lead in the game's first eight minutes.
The scoring of Andrea Feret and Karly Geller, along with the defense of April Rogers allowed the Indians to lead for much of the first half.
Feret led the Blacksburg attack, with a team-high 20 points. Rogers and Geller were the only other players in double figures, with 10 each.
