MAROON TIDE SWALLOWS EAGLES

Tiffany Williams and Mindy McGrady combined for 12 points in a pivotal second-quarter run as Galax defeated Auburn 44-40 in a non-district game at Auburn on Wednesday night.

The Maroon Tide (5-0) outscored the Eagles 20-10 in the second quarter to take a 29-19 lead. Auburn (1-2) closed to two points in the third quarter, but Galax stretched the lead again.

Tammy Cox led Galax with 15 points and Williams had 11. Auburn was led by Crystal Moles' 16 points.

Alleghany 71, Parry McCluer 60: Natasha Chapman and Melissa Page led a big Alleghany second half as the Mountaineers downed Parry McCluer in a non-district game in Low Moor.

Chapman scored 13 of her career-high 29 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 23 in the second half as Alleghany (1-3) pulled away. Page scored 10 of her 16 points in the third quarter.

Parry McCluer (0-1) was led by senior Chrystal Humphries, who scored 22 points.

Blacksburg 57, Tazewell 44: April Rogers scored a game-high 18 points as Blacksburg rebounded from Tuesday night's loss to Lord Botetourt with a non-district win over Tazewell in Blacksburg.

Rogers scored 13 of her points in the first half as the Indians (2-3) took a two-point lead at halftime. Andrea Feret aided Blacksburg by scoring eight of her 16 in the fourth quarter to stave off a late Tazewell rally.

Salem 57, Radford 39: Shellie Johnson scored 12 of her game-high 24 points in the third quarter as the Spartans pulled away for the non-district victory in Salem.

Salem (2-0), which defeated two-time Group A champion Floyd County on Tuesday night, also got 11 points from Marilyn Huang.

Radford was led by Crystal Hubbard, who scored 13 of her team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter. Charlee Taylor added 13 for the Bobcats.

Magna Vista 71, Dan River 37: Tanesia Kellam scored all 13 of her points in the first half as Magna Vista rolled past Dan River in a Piedmont District contest in Ridgeway.

Junior Hope Fulcher added 14 points as the Warriors (2-2, 1-0) opened up a 23-point halftime lead.

Galax 40, Carroll County 30: Senior Tammy Cox and sophomore Erin Kyle scored 13 points each to lead Galax past Carroll County in a low-scoring, non-district contest in Galax.

Carroll County (2-2) was led by Angie Farmer and Denean Jessup, who scored six each.

Stuarts Draft 38, Rockbridge County 33: In Lexington, visiting Stuarts Draft capitalized on 14 offensive rebounds, and Rockbridge suffered from a case of poor shooting as the Cougars (1-1) defeated the Wildcats (1-1) in a non-district girls' basketball matchup

Tunstall 63, Bassett 48: In Dry Fork, Melissa Dixon scored 23 points as Tunstall (4-0) opened its Piedmont District season with a victory. Bassett (0-1), outscored by 15 points in the final quarter, was led by Heather Miller with a game-high 25 points.
