Carilion sells mail center, targets care

Carilion Health System has sold a Roanoke mail processing business as part of an ongoing process of focusing on operating health care facilities.

Presort Express, at 1259 Williamson Road, was sold to Best Mailing Service Inc. of Lynchburg, Best Mailing said Wednesday. The deal was completed Aug. 25.

Presort runs mail through machines that stamp a bar code on envelopes and sort items to qualify for discounted rates from the U.S. Postal Service. The purchase of the business will help relieve the workload at the Lynchburg site, Best Mailing spokeswoman Elizabeth Emmett said.

Best Mailing does not plan to lay off any of Presort's employees. It will keep employment at 10 to 15 people, Emmett said.

Presort was created in 1992 by a Carilion for-profit subsidiary, Communicorp. It was intended to serve the company and outside clients.

Taylor Technologies Group, Roanoke consultants on elevators, escalators and other forms of "vertical transportation," has expanded by buying part of a similar company in Columbia, S.C.

Taylor Technologies President Michelle Taylor said the company bought contracts held by Palmetto Elevator Inspections in Horry and Georgetown counties. The deal was completed last Friday, Taylor said.

Taylor Technologies, with fewer than 10 employees, provides inspection and engineering services for clients nationwide, which operate devices that move people and materials, including dumbwaiters and wheelchair lifts.

Services include accident investigation, expert witness testimony, design of equipment upgrades and training of elevator inspectors.

Graphic arts firm opens sales office

EPI Communications, a Rockville, Md.-based graphic arts company, has opened a sales office on Salem Avenue in Roanoke.

It is not the company's first entry into Roanoke. In April, EPI bought an equity stake in Image Center Inc., a Roanoke graphic arts company, and provided multimedia and other services to Roanoke-area clients.

Image Center closed in early August, and the Maryland company lost its Roanoke representation.

The new EPI office will be run by Lisa Phillips, a former Image Center customer service and sales representative, said EPI president Ethan Assal.

All work will be done at the company's headquarters in Maryland, he said. The Roanoke office will be EPI's only location outside the Washington, D.C., area.

EPI, which has 150 employees and has been in business for about six years, provides video, photographic, design, prepress and multimedia services as well as computer training seminars. The company also sells computer graphics hardware and software. All services will be available through the Roanoke office.
