ATKINS, Estelle Daniel, 73, of Rt. 1, Independence, the Carsonville Community, a devoted and loving wife, a very caring neighbor and friend, departed this life Tuesday, September 5, 1995, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax. She was born March 18, 1922, at Elk Creek, and was a member of Summerfield United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers, and an aunt, Miss Clyde Daniel. She is survived by her husband, James E. Atkins of the home; a cousin and wife, Ralph D. and Patsy Taylor of Indep endence; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carroll and Frances Mason of Radford and Marshall and Nancy Bailey of Charlotte Court House, and a nephew and wife, Charles and Brenda Carrico of Galax. Several other cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, September 8, 1995, in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder Jess B. Higgins, Elder Terry V. Wilson and the Rev. Virginia Eminhizer officiating. Interment will be in Summerfield Cemetery. The body will remain at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. BIRD, Daisie Lee Webb, 93, of Hillsville, passed away at her home on Beaver Dam Road on Wednesday, September 6, 1995, after an illness of several months. Mrs. Bird was the daughter of Walter and Elva Gardner Webb. She was preceded in death by four husbands, Ira Price, Walter Carter, Ned Mills and David Bird, and three sons, Robert, James and Ray Price. She is survived by four grandchildren, Robert Price Jr., Tega Cay, S.C., James Price, Charlotte, N.C., Dianne Price Howsare, Rock Hill, S.C., and Sandra Price Richards, Charlotte, N.C. Ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter also survive. Mrs. Bird was very loyal to and active in the Hillsville First United M ethodist Church. She also was active in the Woman's Club, D.A.R., the Garden Club and other civic and social affairs. Funeral services will be held in the Hillsville First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Friday, September 8, 1995, with the Rev. Nathan Malone officiating. Interment will follow in the Gardner Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville.

BITTINGER, Myles W illard, 79, of White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 5, 1995, at his home following an extended illness. He was born June 14, 1916, at White Sulphur Springs, a son of the late Harry and Zettie Cox Bittinger. He was an active member of the White Sulphur Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church for 45 years. He held a Mission Workers License in the Appalachian Conference of the Pentecostal Holiness Church and pastored several small area churches. He was a retired employee of the National Fish Hatchery in White Sulphur Springs. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific. He was a member of the VFW and the DAV of White Sulphur Springs. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Keith Snider. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Louise Koontz Bittinger; two sons, Roy Bittinger and his wife Shelva of Seattle, Wash., and Raymond Bittinger Sr. and his wife Diane of Christiansburg, Va.; six daughters, Alice Jean Snider and Mrs. Shirley Thompson and husband Jimmie of Charlottesville, Va., Mrs. Velma Defibaugh and husband Robert of Winnsboro, S.C., Mrs. Ruth Cochran and husband Thomas of Buena Vista, Va., Mrs. Pat Wykle and husband Richard of White Sulphur Springs, Mrs. Pauline Legg and husband David of Covington, Va.; four brothers, five sisters, 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, September 8, 1995, at the Pentecostal Holiness Church, White Sulphur Springs, with the Rev. Gene Sizemore and the Rev. Mike Edds officiating. Interment will follow at Whatcoat Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive their friends at Shanklin Funeral Home, White Sulphur Springs, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. BRICKEY, Helen Burns, 75, of Salem, died Friday, September 1, 1995, at her home. A native of Macon, Ga., she was the widow of Leonard Raymond Brickey. She is survived by three children, Michael, Linda and Stephen; grandchildren, Rachael, Christian, Ann-Michael; one sister, Ouida Wingerter; stepmother, Mrs. W.C. Burns; dear friend, Shelby Leonard. She asked her family to express special thanks to the nurses and staff of Roanoke Memorial Hospital Home Health Services, Janet Yoder, Dr. Jesse Davidson and the nurses and staff of 8 West at Community Hospital. BROWN, Raymond Owey Sr., 66, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, September 4, 1995. He was a former employee of Webster Brick. Survivors include his wife, Mary M. Donald Brown; three sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond O. Jr. and Mary J. Brown, Arch Madison Brown, Ronnie Lee and Jennifer L. Brown, all of Roanoke; three daughters, Mary Frances Brown and finance, Dewey Love, Thaxton, Brenda Gail Hawk and finance, Bill Marshall, Roanoke, Carol Ann Spradlin, and husband, John, Roanoke; one sister, Melissa Bramlett, Montvale; 16 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; . HALE, Paul Cecil, 81, of Narrows, died Wednesday morning at his home. A lifelong resident of Giles County, he was born on April 21, 1914, and was the son of the late, Rufus Charlie and Hattie McClanahan Hale. He was a member of the Kathleen Memorial United Methodist Church and was a retired employee of the Hoechst/Celanese Fibers Company Plant in Narrows, and was a farmer. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy J. Hale, Narrows, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Cecil and Carol Hale, Narrows; a grandson and his wife, Paul Cecil and Michelle Hale of Narrows; granddaughter and her husband, Beth Anne and Maurice Swain, Crai g County; a great-granddaughter, Paula Cecile Hale, Narrows; brother, Mason Hale, Narrows; sister, Helen Fowler, Narrows; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday morning September 8, 1995 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows, with Rev. Kimball Jones officiating. HAWKINS, Roby Daniel, 68, of Salem, died Tuesday , September 5, 1995, in a Salem hospital. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda H. and Michael Barley, Carrollton; two grandsons, Justin Barley, Shaun Barley, both of Carrollton; one sister; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held Friday, September 8, 3:30 p.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Robert Sadler officiating. Friends may call at Lotz Salem Chapel after 12 noon on Friday.

HODGES, Carl Gray, 70, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, September 5, 1995, in a Roanoke hospital. He was a World War II veteran. He is survived by his wife, Rose Hodges; four children, Donald Hodges, Florida, Michael Hodges, Roanoke, Judy Melwrath, Pennsylvania, Tracy Pinto, Ferrum; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Gaynor Hodges, Calvin and Garnet Hodges; two sisters and brother-in-law, Frances Cecil, Jane and Melvin Campbell; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two stepsons, John Glovier, Tim Glovier. ILIEFF, Irene Constantine Yazwin, 71, of Richmond, formerly of Roanoke, widow of George Ilieff, died Tuesday, September 5, 1995. She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Roth of Richmond, Milla Ilieff of New York City, Lana Allen of Richmond; two grandsons, Bryan and Eric Roth. KERR, Terry R., 49, of Ohio, died Tuesday, September 5, 1995, at his home. Terry was a former minister with the Church of Christ and had 27 years service with various churches in Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Virginia, and Ohio. He was currently a member of the Beechwold Church of Christ, a graduate of Atlanta Christian College, Master's of Divinity degree, and Lincoln Christian Seminary. He is survived by his wife, Sandra S. Kerr; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Chad Babbert, Harrison, Ohio; son, Micah Kerr, at home; his parents, Bob and Mary Kerr, Atlanta, Ga.; brother, Jerry (Tricia) Kerr; niece, Lindsay Kerr, all of Conyers, Ga. Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Lotz Salem Chapel. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Salem Church of Christ by Pastors Marion Harris, Paul Hatfield, Jim Herron, and David Vaughn with burial in Sherwood Memorial Park. LILLY, Arthur Gordon, (""A.G.""), 45 of Belspring went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 5, 1995, at his home. Born in Radford on November 14, 1949, he is the son of Virgil I. & Hazel Wood Lilly of Fairlawn. He was a member of the Belspring Baptist Church and a former mechanic at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Survivors in addition to his parents are his wife, Veronica Semones Lilly of Belspring; step-daughter, Jennifer Gravley Parks, Radford; step-son, Robin Guy Moses, Roanoke; two sisters, Ann King of Parrott and Margaret Hawley, Christiansburg; two brothers, Roger Lilly, Fairlawn and Mark Lilly of Dublin; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Friday, Septe mber 8, 1995 at 11 a.m. at the Belspring Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Williams and the Rev. Sandy Harrell officiating. MATTHEWS, Helen Rhudy, 72, of 1004 Morehead Lane, Pulaski, Va. died Tuesday, September 5, 1995, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Pulaski, Virginia on March 20, 1923, and was the daughter of the late William Conley Rhudy, Sr. and Clarice Warden Rhudy. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Hambrick. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Pulaski. Surviving are her husband, William Greer Matthews, Jr., Pulaski; one brother, William C. Rhudy, Jr., Pulaski. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from Oakwood Cemetery, Pulaski, with the Rev. John McCandlish officiating. McCADDEN, Lyndon Carrington Jr., (``Butch""), 46, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, September 4, 1995. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was employed at Harris Teeter. Survivors include Nadirah Preston, wife before God; one son, Darren McCadden, U.S. Army, stationed in Louisiana; sisters and brothers, Carol (Steve) Poindexter, Marilyn (Roland) Reynolds, Deborah (John) Walker, Gerald (Barbara) McCadden, Eugene (Patricia) McCadden, Donald (Crystal) McCadden, and Carrington (Michelle) McCadden; ex-wife, Anna McCadden; 13 nieces and nephews; two great-nephews; stepfather, William Toliver; several uncles and aunts; a devoted friend, Janie Ollie; a host of other relatives and friends. MILLER, Arthur Lloyd, Jr., 74, of Wytheville, died Tuesday evening, September 5, 1995, at his residence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian J. Miller. Mr. Miller was a World War II veteran, serving as a medic in the 26th Yankee Division in the European Theatre under General Patton's 3rd Army, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Cluster, Purple Heart and Cluster, and Medical Badge. He also was a Master Mason in the Wytheville Fraternal Lodge #82, a member of the Scottish Rite, and a Shriner with the Kazim Temple of Roanoke. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur L. (``Artie"") III and Joyce Miller, Larry K. and Janet Miller of Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and C.J. Dillon, Wytheville; a sister-in-law, Mrs. T.P. Webster, Dublin, and special friend, Leota Kruse, Wytheville. Three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Christian Church, with interment to follow in the West End Cemetery. MURRAY, Eula Campbell, 90, of Vinton, died Tuesday, September 5, 1995 in a local hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett W. PHILLIPS, Emma Jane Oliver, 58, of Blacksburg, formerly of Greensboro, N.C., died Wednesday, September 6, 1995, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She is survived by a son, Michael P. Phillips, Greensboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Anthony Wilson, Blacksburg; 3 grandchildren, Ashley, Erin Jane, and Kevin Wilson, all of Blacksburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Joyce Oliver, Greensboro, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. SCHUERMANN, Gladys Bogart, 87, of Vinton, passed away Wednesday, September 6, 1995. She had worked for Montgomery Grocery in Midway for over 40 years. She was the widow of Rev. William S. Schuermann and was predeceased by a grandson, Eric William Schuermann. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonny S. and Frank Sparks, Vinton; Betty S. and Eugene Stiff, Rock Hill, S.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, William S. and Sarah Schuermann, Germany, Robert E. and Mary Ann Schuermann, Roanoke; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 2 stepgreat-grandchildren. SPENCE, Albert Benjamin (""Pops"") 77, of Montvale, died Tuesday, September 5, 1995 in a local hospital. He was formerly of Bethesda, Maryland, where he had operated a Dry Cleaners. He was an Army Veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy M. Spence; daughter and son-in-law, Norma Jean and John Westervelt, Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Gertrude Dean and Margaret McLean, both of Roanoke; two brothers, Fred Spence, DeBary, Fla., Marvin Spence, Greensboro, N.C.; and a number of neices and nephews. Special neighbors and friends in Monvale. Memorial services will be conducted at Friendship Manor, 1 p.m. Friday, September 8, 1995. WALTON, Reverend C. Reginald, 67, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, September 6, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Cadd Walton; his sister, Sarah Georgia Walton of Roanoke; daughters, Diana Hopkins of Saint Louis, Mo., Carol Lunsford of Christiansburg, and Evella Wallinger of Harrisonburg; their spouses, David Hopkins, Jeff Lunsford and Don Wallinger; grandchildren, Emilee, Natalie, and Clint Hopkins, David and Jessica Lunsford, and Greg and Chris Wallinger. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Walton and brother, Robert P. Walton Jr. Reverend Walton graduated from Roanoke College and then received his Master of Divinity degree from Duke University. He served as a minister for 42 years in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. Churches served include the Hyco Circuit in South Boston; New Hope in Stafford County, Gainesville/Sudley in Prince William County; Tabernacle in Poquoson; Chesapeake Avenue in Chesapeake; Lakeside in Richmond; Thalia in Virginia Beach; Bon Air in Richmond; Saint John's in Springfield; Centenary in Portsmouth; and Dulin Falls Church. He served the past two years as Chaplain for the V.A. Medical Center in Salem. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Downtown Chapel from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday. The funeral service will be held at Cave Spring United Methodist Church, 4505 Hazel Drive, Roanoke at 1 p.m. on Friday.

WIMMER, James A., 39, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday, September 5, 1995, in a Salem hospital. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Eugene Flinchum and Rev. Mike Reynolds. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
