Museum seeks items for exhibit

The Virginia Museum of Transportation is forming an exhibit on native Roanokers Robert W. Claytor and his brother, W. Graham Claytor Jr.

Robert Claytor was the former president of the Norfolk & Western Railway and the first chairman and chief executive officer of Norfolk Southern. He was instrumental in preserving and returning to operating condition the Class ``J,'' No. 611 and the Class ``A,'' No. 1218 steam locomotives.

Graham Claytor, former president of the Southern Railway and AMTRAK and deputy secretary of defense and secretary of the Navy under President Jimmy Carter, was a champion of steam railroading who began the steam excursions on the Southern Railway in 1966.

Both men were supporters of the transportation museum and are being honored for their contributions.

The museum officials would like to encourage anyone who has artifacts, letters, photographs, or memorabilia to share about the Claytor brothers to please contact the Virginia Museum of Transportation Inc., 303 Norfolk Ave., SW, Roanoke, Va., 24016, or call Director of Exhibits David Bird at (540) 342-5670.

Museum hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, noon-5 p.m.
